Kerry, Lawmakers: U.S. Isn’t Prepared for Next Attack

The Lowell Sun has rarely been known to turn tail on the conservatives but they certainly did a bit of an about face today with this article, giving creedence to MA and New England Democrats — Mass. lawmakers: U.S. isn’t prepared for next attack.

WASHINGTON — Grim images of unattended corpses and stranded hurricane victims illustrate shocking deficiencies in the nation’s homeland-security systems designed four years ago to prevent and respond to the next 9/11, lawmakers said this week.

Ominous doubt on Capitol Hill about the government’s ability to minimize the loss of life in the event of another major terrorist attack was widespread this week, a sharp contrast to the abundant political unity immediately following the nation-changing al Qaeda attacks of 2001.

“They clearly are not prepared,” Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., told The Sun, referring to the Department of Homeland Security’s readiness for another attack.

The Lowell Sun notes that “Despite more than $100 billion spent since 9/11 to improve domestic protection by folding 22 federal agencies in the Homeland Security Department, New England lawmakers widely criticized the department’s funding as vastly inadequate.”

Kerry, when asked how much more money is needed, simply said “billions.”

“There’s a huge quantity of unmet needs, which we’ve categorized year after year: port security, tunnels, trains, chemical plants, nuclear plants. Just a long list,” Kerry said, adding that homeland security investments have been “diverted to huge tax cuts and Iraq.” The White House said funding is adequate.

Those who paid attention during the election cycle will note that Kerry’s list of unmet needs were needs he discussed over and over again during the election cycle and since… Read the entire article here.

Glad to see JK out there speaking out. I read the story about his comments at a Corzine rally where he said Shrub’s handling of Katrina bordered on criminal negligence. Ain’t that the truth.

Also, on Chris Matthew’s show today Tweety actually lead a discussion on Shrub’s plummeting poll numbers. He asked his panelists if “values” have taken a backseat to “competency” in the minds of average Americans. Someone brought up the idea that a different type of values is now in question. But Tweety, insisting on keeping the discussion simplistic, kept on his track, which seemed to have the undertone that Dems are more competent than Repubs, or at that the very least ShrubCo has finally been revealed as woefully incompetent. I surely do hope this is what is happening. Earlier on MTP, TR spoke with an author of a book about the 1927 Mississippi flood that affected several southern states. Apparently America at that time was not fond of the idea of government assistance for its citizens but that disaster changed everything and folks began to see the role of government differently. Of course The Great Depression played a huge role in this shift as well. Some were questioning if Katrina will help swing the pendulum to the left. If so, I wonder if Katrina was God’s wake up call to America and his way of revealing ShrubCo for what it really is… a dishonorable band of incompetent gangsters. Who knows. From my keypad to God’s ears. 🙂

Also, the women of ShrubCo are just as cruel and clueless as the men. Babs’ comments that Katrina survivors are better off now and that it’s “scary” they want to all move to Houston are just reprehensible. And I’m sure she still doesn’t grasp the concept of how wrong she was to say what she did. Apparently Laura Bush wasn’t as gripped as the rest of the nation to Katrina coverage because she’s the only one who didn’t bother to catch the deadly storm’s name, calling it Corrina. Karen “Big Bertha” Hughes went on the BBC and likened those in New Orleans scavenging for food and clothing for survival (she called them “looters”) to terrorists. Unbelieveable. And Condi didn’t have sense enough to cut short her vacation and pretend to be concerned. She had to suffer harsh criticism in NY and then get a call from Shrub to fly down and play pretend concern for the cameras a week later.

It’s all very shameful really. I just pray the other half of America is FINALLY waking up.

Wow, Florida Dem, that’s good to know. Go below, if you haven’t already, and check out the blog: Government and Floods, A quarter-century of libertarianism is washed away in New Orleans by Harold Meyerson.

I’m SO glad I didn’t hear Karen Large… would have lost it. Babs’ comment was bad enough. Poor George, really, to have such a thing for a mother.

Very very smart. To tie this in immediately with overall security.

The women of ShrubCo have no couth, no class, no manners, no compassion, no understanding….
