Throw Scooter From The Train

People who are far better writers and have more time than I do are weighing in on the opening day of the Scooter Libby trial. But his essential defense, that he was made the scapegoat to protect, not only the president, but Tubby Rove, is hardly surprising to those of us who suspected it all along.

“Said his attorney, Ted Wells, in his opening statement, “Scooter Libby was to be sacrificed.” Until Tuesday, Mr. Libby’s defense on perjury and obstruction of justice charges was that he might simply have remembered incorrectly events he had described to a grand jury and to F.B.I. agents. But Mr. Wells told the jury that White House officials, whom he did not name, wanted to protect Mr. Rove because they believed his survival as President Bush’s chief political adviser was crucial to the health of the Republican Party.

And we all know how that turned out for them last November, don’t we?

But the intrigue is very interesting regarding what Dick Cheney will have to say when he takes the stand. Christy Smith at HuffPo argues the Dick may help Libby’s defense by throwing Rove under the Fitzgerald freight train, while Ginny below notes that Cheney is lucky he wasn’t named an unindicted co-conspirator by Fitzgerald.

In fact, Rove may actually get his comeuppance when all is said and done, and some are speculating Cheney may even resign over the whole mess.

I can take “the Architect” finally being exposed for the rat he is, but Bush picking a new Veep (like his doofus brother)?

God help us then.
