Blanco will not run

I am watching Governor Blanco on TV right now, and she has announced that she will not seek another term. This changes the coming race in a big way. Bring on John Breax! I will update as links get put up.

Update: The Times Picayune has the story.

Beset by complaints about the state’s slow recovery from the 2005 hurricanes, languishing in the polls and facing pressure from her own party, Democratic Gov. Kathleen Blanco announced Tuesday that she will not seek reelection this year.

Blanco, the first woman to be elected governor of the state, made the announcement in a televised address from the Governor’s Mansion shortly after 6 p.m. Stepping away from the podium to hug family and friends, she did not immediately take questions.

“Today, I am announcing that, after much thought and prayer, I have decided not to seek re-election as your governor,” Blanco said.

Although she is six weeks away from a major legislative session and still has nine months remaining in her term, Blanco said she was announcing her decision early to remove some of the politics and partisanship in the debate over recovery.

“I am doing this so we can work without interference from election year politics,” she said.
