President Bush Makes Me Sick!

Do you ever have times when you shake your head in disbelief and don’t think it can get any worse?

It isn’t funny anymore.

It wasn’t funny when the Government gagged the climate scientists from speaking about polar bears at international meetings.

It wasn’t funny when President Bush put the gag on women’s clinics in Africa by denying them funding by the United States when they advised poor African women about abortion.

It wasn’t funny when Philip Cooney, the former chief to President Bush’s Council on Environmental Quality quit when it was revealed that he had doctored scientific reports to downplay the importance of global warming only to get a job at Exxon Mobil days later.

It wasn’t funny when the Bush Administration paid Armstrong Williams $241,000 to promote Bush’s No Child Left Behind program on the air.

But I thought it couldn’t get any worse.

That is why I was completely disgusted to read about the testimony of former Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona today, writing about the pressure he received to alter information, and the total censorship of other matters belonging to the medical and scientific field.

As reported in the article:

“Dr. Carmona, who served as surgeon general from 2002 to 2006, said White House officials would not allow him to speak or issue reports about stem cells, emergency contraception, sex education, or prison, mental and global health issues because of political concerns. Top administration officials delayed for years and attempted to “water down” a landmark report on secondhand tobacco smoke, he said in sworn testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

He was ordered to mention President Bush three times on every page of every speech he gave, Dr. Carmona said. He was asked to make speeches to support Republican political candidates and to attend political briefings, at least one of which included Karl Rove, the president’s senior political adviser, he said.

And administration officials even discouraged him from attending the Special Olympics because, he said, of that charitable organization’s longtime ties to the Kennedy family.

“I was specifically told by a senior person, ‘Why would you want to help those people?’ ” Dr. Carmona said.

The Special Olympics is one of the nation’s premier charitable organizations to benefit disabled people.

The article continues:

“On issue after issue, Dr. Carmona asserted, the Bush administration made decisions about important public health issues based solely on political considerations, not scientific ones.

“I was told to stay away from those because we’ve already decided which way we want to go,” Dr. Carmona said.

He described attending a meeting of top officials in which the subject of global warming was discussed. The other officials concluded that global warming was a liberal cause and dismissed it, he said.

“And I said to myself: ‘I realize why I’ve been invited. They want me to discuss the science because they obviously don’t understand the science,’ ” he said. “I was never invited back.”

He said the science is clear that effective sexual education efforts must offer what he called a “comprehensive approach.”

“However, there was already a policy in place to only support sexual education efforts that discussed only abstinence, he said.

After serving one full term as surgeon general, Dr. Carmona was not asked by the White House to serve another. Before becoming surgeon general, he was in the Army Special Forces, earned two purple hearts in the Vietnam War, was a trauma surgeon and a leader of the Pima County, Ariz., SWAT team. He is now vice chairman of Canyon Ranch, a resort and residential development company.”

What is WRONG with these people?

When scientific evidence shows abstinence-only education ineffective, this nation is supposed instead to march to the drumbeat of the Family Research Council?

And the comment on the Special Olympics? That doesn’t deserve further discussion. And they call themselves “compassionate conservatives”?

It is no wonder that this President is ordering his staff not to testify in the U.S. Attorney firings scandal. He shouldn’t let anyone say anthing to anybody. They aren’t likely to report good things.

There is only one name for this Administration. Sicko.

As I started saying some time ago, this administration will not only be the WORST EVER, it will hold that position for a long time. Now I’m beginning to think they will never be replaced. That isn’t hope, it’s a matter of improbability.

They say Bush is starting to really think of what he does in terms of his legacy. Likely? If he was really thinking about it, he would need to be put on suicide watch.

That first act of Bush, to reinstate the gag order, seared my heart and mind. I was so mad at him from day one, he couldn’t do anything without me guessing what he was probably down to.

When the towers came down, I knew we would be going to war. And all I could think of was ‘there goes the money to reform health care’.

The speculation that some of the BushCo stupidity was actually to bankrupt the country so we would have to stop the social contract programs has been a high probability for me. The rest of this makes sense when it comes to keeping the corporations from having to deal with global warming expenses and keeping the base happy so they turn out to vote.

The Special Olympics testimony is a nauseating look at what really lies in these disabled souls that pretend they have morals, values and hearts like the rest of us.

They may have similar genes, what kind of animals they are is another enigma.

Robert, as always, a tough post very well done. Thanks.

Ever since those fateful days in Florida back in 2000 when we all knew that Jeb being the gov was a sure ticket to W being able to lie, cheat, and steal his way into the White House I had a pretty good idea what kind of people we were dealing with.

From Molly Ivins columns and books to doing a simple fact check on the people picked to run the many agencies within W’s regime it was beyond the pale what was happening.

9/11 being used as a political tool to further their power.

The USAPATRIOT Act, ignoring the FISA Act 1976, enemy combatants, terrorists everywhere, phantoms of lost liberty, how the hell do you people sleep at night?

Lets not forget Satan…..I mean Dick Cheney

I’m just a regular guy, who struggles to make ends meet and when I read or see or hear these kinds of people acting as if they are the only ones that can ‘protect us’ or are ‘one of us’ and they know what ‘we are going’ through makes me angry.

Over the last 6 years I to have been amazed at how these people sink lower and lower into the dark abyss, with the help of a spineless media (owned by corporations), is it no wonder that these people have acted in such a manner? Deregulation anyone?

W (and his cult) like to say that the Dems are the ones that play ‘partisan’ politics but we all know that they need do nothing more than look in a mirror.

Being that my wife and I have a 15 year old Special Ed child that has been in the Special Olympics a few times (5 gold, 2 silver and memories and smiles as big as the world) I am beyond pissed that anyone, especially a ‘senior official’ could make such a heartless comment about that great program!

You are a pathetic excuse for a human!

Same goes for anyone that uses lies and deceit in ways that further line their pockets with money and power at the expense of the moneyless and powerless!

Excuse me, all this talk about W (and his minions) is making me sick…..

    David Soll,

Thanks for the personal perspective and welcome to the Dem Daily.

We could forget the Shooter Dick? Not even if my sometimers becomes alltimers.

That administrative official’s comment has been ripping up my mind for hours. It is good to realize no matter how ugly they are, it will not change the real beauty of the Special Olympics atheletes.

Sorry, I can’t share my Pepto. How about a pink toast to the Special Olympics? To hell with the SOBs. 😎

It would all be so much more effective if these types of disclosures could come out in the context of an impeachment process.

Start the process, and take it on faith that this “sewer” will continue to run. By Christmas people will be ready to storm the Whitehouse with picthforks. The cumulative weight of the filth, the utter stench of this administration, will simply become overpowering.

I wrote my Congress folks asking them to subpena every cabinet official and underling in DC and give then whistleblower status and all the financial guarantees necessary to allow them to tell their stories.

Or, encourage them to log into blogs from coffe shpos..

Sounds like a plan to me.
