Given how poorly international news makes it to American media, I frequently seek out sources from overseas. The memeorandoum item just said “Listen to this programme in full.” The story was yet another dot in the accurate history of our last century of unelected, rich, powerful white men running this country, that most Americans have yet to discover.
In a radio program, Document , investigative reporter Mike Thomson followed a document to the archives in DC and discovered more of the story.
The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell Hse & George Bush’s Grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression.
Mike Thomson investigates why so little is known about this biggest ever peacetime threat to American democracy.
What is truly ironic about the plot is the group foolishly approached Major General Smedley D. Butler to form an army to overthrow FDR. Smedley was very popular with the WWI vets and was also wise to the nascent beginnings of the millitary-industrial complex. After his testimony failed to stop the war mongers and WWII was becoming a major threat, the general wrote an essay, WAR IS A RACKET, still widely referred to for it’s vision.
Only the other day, Il Duce in “International Conciliation,” the publication of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said:
“And above all, Fascism, the more it considers and observes the future and the development of humanity quite apart from political considerations of the moment, believes neither in the possibility nor the utility of perpetual peace… War alone brings up to its highest tension all human energy and puts the stamp of nobility upon the people who have the courage to meet it.”
Another dot in history that is part of this picture was brought out by Kevin Phillips in American Dynasty : Aristocracy, Fortune, and the Politics of Deceit in the House of Bush . The 2004 book traced the history of the Walker-Bush clan and others who contributed to the growth of a powerful group of financiers, industrialists, military and political operatives who covertly and financially nurtured the ongoing strife in Europe and other areas of the world. The Bolshevik Revolution in October of 1917 overthrew the legitimate government that came from the February revolution because the meddling power brokers backed Lenin. They were the ones who profited, as Smedley explained, from the treasures paid by others.
Out of war nations acquire additional territory, if they are victorious. They just take it. This newly acquired territory promptly is exploited by the few – the selfsame few who wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the bill.
And what is this bill?
This bill renders a horrible accounting. Newly placed gravestones. Mangled bodies. Shattered minds. Broken hearts and homes. Economic instability. Depression and all its attendant miseries. Back-breaking taxation for generations and generations.
For a great many years, as a soldier, I had a suspicion that war was a racket; not until I retired to civil life did I fully realize it. Now that I see the international war clouds gathering, as they are today, I must face it and speak out.
When will we listen? When do we stop believing the same old tricks and refuse to fight?
