Well, it’s the 2nd of July (the real birthday of The Declaration of Independence). Whether we ever get there or not, it’s time to steel ourselves to the possibility and the committment that is radically put forth in the Declaration: But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide...

Won’t you be my neighbor?

Won’t you be my neighbor?

Imagine a submarine rising to the surface in the Gulf of Mexico. It starts to shell Galveston, and fire missiles toward Houston. Imagine a freighter anchored near San Diego, which suddenly starts lobbing missiles toward Sea World. Imagine a Lear Jet cruising the Great Lakes firing wing-mounted rockets into Niagara Falls. What would be the chances that Mexico, or Canada, would come to the aid of the US in such a circumstance? If the obvious assumption were true, that...

Parting the Veil II

Last Friday I published this post about an article which was sent to me to review, written by Shadi Hamid, Project on Middle East Democracy’s Director of Research, called “Parting the Veil.” As I noted then, the article is well worth the read: it is highly interesting and thought provoking. I cannot say that I agree with everything Hamid writes, but he makes some good points, and raises some interesting questions. The main point the author makes is that...

McCain’s Shake-Up

July 2, 2007 11:21 am

Senator John McCain has decided to shake-up his campaign (staff). The campaign is currently “undergoing a significant reorganization with staff cuts in every department.” All in all, some fifty (50) staffers “are being let go, and senior aides will be subject to pay cuts as the Arizona senator’s campaign bows to the reality of six months of subpar fundraising.” Furthermore, “Terry Nelson, a veteran of President Bush’s winning 2004 campaign, will remain campaign manager but may volunteer his time...

Hey Obama! What DOES Rise to the Level of Impeachable Offense?

July 2, 2007 1:26 am

My enthusiasm for the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama (D, Ill.) just dipped a couple of notches. Why? Well, I consider sound judgment and common sense to be prerequisites to taking on the most critical presidential term since, perhaps, the Civil War. See how YOU think he scores here: Associated Press story, from the International Herald Tribune (NY Times overseas): Obama says despite shortcomings of Bush administration, impeachment is not acceptable The Associated Press Published: June 28, 2007 WASHINGTON:...
