The Politics of Dish and Swipe

The Obama campaign had a little two for one deal going today when Obama spokesman Bill Burton used the opportunity of responding to Rudy Giuliani calling Obama’s Iran strategy “naive” and “irresponsible,” to take a swipe at Hillary Clinton. This is tacky stuff coming from the Obama campaign: “While Rudy Giuliani may embrace Hillary Clinton’s policy of not talking and saber rattling towards Iran, Barack Obama knows that policy is not working,” Burton said in a statement. “It’s time for tough and direct...

The Right-Wing Smear Machine Cranks Up

I think we all know it — next year the Republican Party is going to run as dirty an election campaign as we’ve ever seen in this country. I’ve seen it first hand, and their shadowy front-groups are going to be out in force. And it won’t just be the Presidential race, but the entire apparatus of the Republican Party will use the same right wing “Swift-Boat” style attack tactics in every race at every level. And in the...

Leahy to oppose Mukasey

The opposition to Mukasey grows today, as Think Progress reports: Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) today announced that he will vote against Michael Mukasey’s attorney general nomination, “potentially derailing his confirmation.” “No American should need a classified briefing to determine whether waterboarding is torture,” said Leahy, who will hold a press conference later in the day. Four other Democrats on the panel have also said they will vote against Mukasey. From Leahy’s statement: I am eager to restore...

The foreclosure picture worsens, with no end in sight, as USA Today reports: Number of U.S. homes facing foreclosure doubles: LOS ANGELES — A soaring number of U.S. homeowners struggled to make mortgage payments in the third quarter, with properties in some stage of foreclosure more than doubling from the same time last year, a mortgage data company said Thursday. Over the years I’ve actually encountered a few people who let their home go through foreclosure instead of selling...

America, Open For Business, Closed To Freedom

Is there any area of our government, over the span of the last seven years, any area, in domestic or foreign policy, national defense, public welfare, the economy, name it, where the average, reasonably informed American might point to success, to signs of progress, of improvement, something, anything, to point to with satisfaction, with pride? Yesterday I read an article by Steve Benin on the resignation of Karen Hughes from her post as Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy...

Oops! Forgot my morning cuppa. I’ll be right back. Sort out your desk or stop by here, until I’m done. Oh, and behave yourselves. I don’t wanna hear any bad reports! Ahh! That feels better. Let’s proceed. From Signs of the Times: Deadly month in Iraq following deadliest year contradicts US claims of progress: The October death toll remained sharply down on the August figure of 1,770 but the increase on September dented boasts from both US and Iraqi...

Feinstein Introduces Measure to Establish Federal Ban on Phthalates in Children’s Toys

November 2, 2007 12:45 am
By

Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced a measure to establish a federal ban on phthalates in children’s toys on Thursday. The bill is modeled after California’s landmark ban on phthalates. Phthalates are chemicals that added to common plastic products to make them soft and pliable and they can be found in a variety of children’s toys and childcare products that are frequently put in a child’s mouth, such as teethers, rubber ducks, and soft bath books. They are also found in a number...
