I really had to post a few quips from this piece below, because I was listening to a little right wing talk radio over the holiday and heard a caller complaining about how the reported news is all bad these days: “The drive by media is so liberal that they just won’t ever report any of the good things that are happening in Iraq. Liberals just hate the troops, and can’t help themselves.”
With American military successes outpacing political gains in Iraq, the Bush administration has lowered its expectation of quickly achieving major steps toward unifying the country, including passage of a long-stymied plan to share oil revenues and holding regional elections.
Instead, administration officials say they are focusing their immediate efforts on several more limited but achievable goals in the hope of convincing Iraqis, foreign governments and Americans that progress is being made toward the political breakthroughs that the military campaign of the past 10 months was supposed to promote.
The short-term American targets include passage of a $48 billion Iraqi budget, something the Iraqis say they are on their way to doing anyway; renewing the United Nations mandate that authorizes an American presence in the country, which the Iraqis have done repeatedly before; and passing legislation to allow thousands of Baath Party members from Saddam Hussein’s era to rejoin the government. A senior Bush administration official described that goal as largely symbolic since rehirings have been quietly taking place already.
Actually what grinds on me so badly about this tired old song is that it hasn’t changed a single word over the years. This chorus started up shortly after the invasion in 2003, and has just not gotten any better with age. I mean, if there was so much good happening all of this time, wouldn’t some of it become impossible to hide eventually? In fact, wouldn’t things actually even be so good by now that there wouldn’t be any violence left over there. I’m picturing all sweetness and light well before now.
So, anyway, you’ve got a group of people who are demonstrably wrong about a core belief, and simply lack sufficient self reflection to stop repeating this untruth year after year. They just don’t have the ability to even see it for what it is! Or do they think that everyone else is so stupid that we’ll all fall for it eventually?
