Sexism ‘Alive and Well’ on the Campaign Trail in NH

I grew up on the Massachusetts – New Hampshire border and lived for 33 years years not far from where this incident happened today in Salem, NH.Β It’s just another sad statement on the treatment Hillary Clinton is getting that is, to be frank oh, so sexist:

Ah, the remnants of sexism β€” alive and well,” Clinton said to applause in a school auditorium.

The two men were removed from the hall after raising a pair of signs that said, “Iron my shirt!” They also shouted the same slogan.

“Can we turn the lights on? It’s awfully dark,” Clinton said, cueing the lights to come and police to come forward to take the men away.

The overflow crowd burst into applause and some began shouting, “Iron my shirt” as the two were taken from the hall.

“As I think has been abundantly demonstrated, I am also running to break through the highest and hardest glass ceiling,” she said.

Clinton later joked about the incident as she invited questions.

“If there’s anyone left in the auditorium who wants to learn how to iron a shirt, I’ll talk about that,” she said with a smile.

Becky nails it on Preemptive Karma: Go Iron Your Own Damned Shirt. And SusanUnPC points out, “The United States ranks 67th in the world in the number of women it has elected to office β€” between Zimbabwe and Turkistan, according to BBC World News.”

It’s pretty darn sad in my opinion that here I am in 2008 reporting on crap like this from a couple of young men who really ought to know better in this day and age. But, they don’t obviously, because as Hillary Clinton pointed out, sexism is still “alive and well.” We could change that with this election. Women, who make up nearly 50% of the population could say, we’re not going to take it anymore and elect a highly qualified liberal woman to be the first woman president. People like this are still very, very afraid of a Hillary Clinton presidency. Don’t let them win.

This is the type of thing I have been bracing for heading into this election cycle…the “isms” (sexism and racism, in particular). Being a voter who has been the target of both “isms”, it gets my ire up to hear ignorant comments like “Iron My Shirt” or comments on how Obama isn’t like the “typical” black man.

First you thing, WTF? And, then you think, if this country is so enlightened, how come other countries have had more than one female leader since their inception and this country has not seen one, not even so much as a Vice-president.

Now, I’m bracing myself for the assinine coffee shop debates. You know the ones you overhear (eavesdrop on), but it would be rude to give your input although it’s eating you up inside to finally say something to another numbskull that has something to say about how women aren’t capable of making decisions on their own or how they can’t be trusted to keep their tempers during “that time of the month” or how women are only good for “one thing” and that’s why they could never support a woman, even if she did get elected and so on…

The press is doing its’ darndest to give her the Howard Dean treatment…

Personally, Hillary is at the bottom of my list of candidates to vote for (but way above HuckaRoMcCain). But, I must admit to a bit of excitement that a woman is running for president and that she might have a real shot.

(Oh yeah…and that black guy, too πŸ˜€ )

This morning I heard an audio clip of that on the radio. One word to describe it: unbelievable. Hillary’s not on the top of my list either, but if she’s the woman to break through that glass ceiling then so be it. I’ve been hearing from others how appalled they are by this too and I think it’s helping her ratings on places like (which is an interesting site if you haven’t checked it out before).

Silent Majority, Moral Majority, and Compassionate Conservatism were always oly code words for The Sexist, Racist party and all three of them led to two term Presidents. As recently as last election.

It’s a bit tough to be real surprised when the evidence is in front of your face.
