Hours After Saying He’ll “Never Underestimate Hillary Clinton Again,” Chris Matthews Slams Hillary

Last night I watched the coverage of the New Hampshire primary results on MSNBC. I listened as Chris Matthews said, “I give her a lot of personal credit; I will never underestimate Hillary Clinton again.” As he said that, I thought to myself, “yeah right.”

Well, “yeah right,” was right. As Greg Sargent points out today:

But by this morning Matthews had already forgotten his newfound respect for her. He said: “The reason she’s a U.S. Senator, the reason she’s a candidate for President, the reason she may be a front-runner, is her husband messed around. That’s how she got to be Senator from New York. We keep forgetting it. She didn’t win it on the merits…”

Astounding isn’t it? Watch this clip of Matthews from last night and then this morning:

Anyone who thinks that Hillary Clinton can get a fair shake in the media, can think again. Taylor Marsh has more. Matthews petty and vile statements about Hillary Clinton this morning personify the ugly sexism that is rampant in the media coverage of Hillary Clinton.

  1. Pamela, for some reason the computer I’m at won’t allow me access to cross-post, but I have a similarly related post up over at AoF about how MSNBC in general missed the boat last night, including Olbermann as well.

  2. I think MSNBC had, by far, the best coverage last night but this is a disgusting turn of events by Matthews. Not understandable is a phrase that comes to mind.

Her interview this morning with Viera is good and I’ll be trying to post that later.

  4. In his first comment he states, ” I will never underestimate Hillary Clinton again.” In his second statement on the following day he is giving his own, although totally chauvenistic, assessment of the reason for her appeal. I certainly do not agree with Mr. Matthew’s sexist reasoning for her appeal. Her appeal is based on her being a truly brillant human being, who just happens to be a female. Although his assessment of her appeal is deplorable, the two statements are really not contradictory. He first states that he will never UNDERESTIMATE her. Then he makes a totally disgusting rationale for her appeal. Although he reveals his ignorance, the statements in and of themselves are not contradictory. Buzz
