Blogroll Amnesty Day – Celebrating the Spirit of Linking

My good friends Skippy and Jon Swift are calling on bloggers to join in and celebrate Blogroll Amnesty day this weekend:

today marks the three-day weekend celebration blog-burst of b.a.d., or blogroll amnesty day for short, and literally dozens of participating blogs will be participating.

each blog will celebrate the unity of progressive infrastructure amenability by posting links to a handful of smaller blogs, thus giving exposure to diverse voices thru-out blogtopia, and yes, we coined that phrase!

we figure the only way to fight the great echo chamber of the hardly-ever-right is to create our own, and the best way to do that is to give linkage (hey, it’s free!) to other writers with our same goals.

The political blogosphere in many ways is a community of like minded people. People who care passionately about their country, and although they might not always agree on the issues or the candidates, most bloggers are here every day voicing their opinions and sharing the news.

Last year one of the big kids on the block, Atrios announced “he was declaring February 3 Blogroll Amnesty Day, and other bloggers followed suit.” Much to many bloggers chagrin, instead of adding more blogs to his blogroll, Atrios removed many blogs “including some bloggers who were his longtime friends.”

And thus, “Blogroll Amnesty Day, it turned out, was a very Orwellian concept.” Although some of the other big kids on the block followed Atrios’ example, many of the smaller blogs who had been cut by Atrios decided to change “their own blogroll policies and now link more freely to others.”

I’ve always had a liberal blogroll policy, linking to blogs who include The Dem Daily on their blogroll and randomly adding new blogs that I enjoy reading regardless of whether they link back. And as the ever eloquent Jon Swift points out, other bloggers also opted to add more blogs to their blogrolls, rather that follow in Atrios’ reverse mentality:

PZ Myers of Pharyngula now has real Blogroll Amnesty Days where he invites anyone who has blogrolled him to join his blogroll. And in the wake of the bloodletting quite a number of smaller blogs, like my friend skippy the bush kangaroo, changed their own blogroll policies and now link more freely to others.

And so today, The Dem Daily, joins a host of blogs to turn Blogroll Amnesty Day “into a celebration of the power of smaller blogs.” Here’s a round up of participating blogs – please take the time to visit these blogs and read their posts on the importance of Blogroll Amnesty Day:

There you have it — if you’re not blogging about Blogroll Amnesty Day — you should be!

I also want to give a shout out to some very worthy blogs who’s owners all blog here at The Dem Daily:

And a shout out to other friends in the blogosphere whose perspectives and views are worthy of reading:

Last but not least, if we’re on your blogroll and you’re not on ours, please let me know by posting in the comments and over the weekend I will get you added to our blogroll.

  2. Thanks for listing me! I am adding you to my blogroll stat. I actually prefer having a small blog because I can get to know every commenter that stops by.

I don’t understand why we don’t also, as well as link to smaller blogs, expunge the larger blogs for at least the weekend. Wouldn’t that be the logical extension of this line of thought?

  4. Hi! Thanks for participating in Blogroll Amnesty Day. I like the idea of everyone taking what might have been seen as a bit of negative for some and turning it into a positive for everyone. You should see a new link back to you shortly!
