It's also worth noting that Scaife hasn't actually endorsed anyone. He came away with a favorable impression of Hillary Clinton, or at least more favorable than he had had before. Given that he previously accused her of murder and eating roasted spotted owls for breakfast, that could mean anything.

Is it nice that someone said positive things about her? Yes. To us.

Are we suddenly falling over ourselves with joy and calling Richard Scaife the moral equivalent of John the Baptist? No. He's still a dickhead, and I see no reason not to call him one.

In honesty, what's happened is that Scaife and a bunch of reporters met with her in a meeting that could have been tense and was better than both thought it would be. He said he was left with a favorable impression her, and that he has yet to meet Obama.

What will you do if he comes away with a favorable impression of Scaife?

When will yuo run back to the Obama boards and make up stories about how we're all falling over ourselves to fluff Scaife and nominate him for canonization now that he "likes" our candidate?

For those riding the Unity Pony, criticizing Hillary for meeting with Scaife seems a little ironic. Obama's campaign has acted petty and vindictive on numerous occasions (Paul Krugman retaliation, Jesse Jackson Jr. and his intimidation strategy, the treatment of Sheila Jackson Lee come to mind). Real unity comes with actions and the willingness to work with people you don't want to work with. That's what presidential leadership is all about.

Tough, Diane. She still had to talk to him -- and if her strategy of talking to him is not a good one Because He's Bad, then defend Obama's intention of talking to absolutely anyone without conditions.

Trust me -- McCain would and will make mincemeat of Obama. The swooning, fainting ranks of his koolaid-drining fans may think that he can cause anyone to see the mystic light, but that isn't the way it works. The last several times he's tried to work with either people on the other side of the desk or ambivalent people, he's showed an amazing skill at bollocking it up.

He ticked off Ed Rendell with his presumptiveness, he annoyed the hell out of Elizabeth Edwards, and he pissed off John McCain with his clumsiness. (As someone who does media relations work, McCain was justifiably pissed; you don't make releases without running them through the other office's approval path.)

He cannot handle people who don't instantaneously swoon at the marvel that is him, and he offends the hell out of them with his ego. McCain will crush him. Like an undercooked prawn.

Actually, Obama's tendency to screw up what should be shoe-in diplomatic and negotiating chats is illustrative; a lot of his faithful are on the young side. How many 25 year old US Senators do you know? Me, not many. You all may gripe at how craggy, stale old farts don't care for him, but stale old farts are the people IN the Senate. If he can't deal with them from a position of authority, he's screwed.

But to get back to the issue to hand, you are implying that since Scaife said a nice thing about Hillary that he wants her to win and henceforth she's sure to fail against McCain. Wrong. Again, I state: he will crush Obama. Crush him. There's no there there, and McCain will illustrate that time and again, calling him out on EVERY SINGLE instance of truthy puff-uppery, and there are lots. The guy is paper-thin.

Back in February, 2007, Scaife had said that his checkbook was closed when it came to backing an Anti-Hillary campaign. What prompted this change of "heart"? Only Scaife knows the real reason.

This may have a lot of other factors and I really do not think Scaife has "mellowed" but I think he sees Hillary as the best of some very bad options, including McCain. Considering that Sen. Obama has been touting his ability to work with Republicans to bring us all together, Scaife's praise of Sen. Clinton speaks to her ability to change her "enemies" minds.

Scaife, owner of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, who has often criticized Hillary and her campaign, takes a second look after an intensive 90 minute interview which the NY Times reported on here.
Because he runs a big newspaper, and even though she can't stomach him on sight probably, she had to factor him in and go into that room and sit down and talk. So she did it. That's professionalism.

Obama's the one who said he's talk to anyone no matter who they were or how entrenched an enemy of the US they were, without pre-conditions.

Once again, he talks, and she does. If he wants to see what it looks like when it's done, that's what it looks like. *shrug*

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why Clinton would even go into the same room as Scaife, let alone talk with him. Someone tries to bring down my husband's governorship, accuses me of murder, then brings down my husband's presidency--talk would be the last thing on my mind.

Scaife remains the biggest--next to Cheney--right-wing monster in the U.S.
