Obama Stands Up and Knocks Wright Down

Barack Obama climbed out from under the bus, Reverend Jeremiah Wright threw him under yesterday and stood up today and did what he should have done weeks ago… He denounced his former pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright and the “substance of his remarks yesterday.”

It was a show of major damage control today as Obama said:

I have spent my entire adult life trying to bridge the gap between different kinds of people. That’s in my DNA, trying to promote mutual understanding to insist that we all share common hopes and common dreams as Americans and as human beings. That’s who I am, that’s what I believe, and that’s what this campaign has been about.”

“I am outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle that we saw yesterday.”

I’m not too sure whether bridging the “gap between different kinds of people,” is in anyone’s DNA… but that is another discussion. Regardless. previously reluctant to thoroughly distance himself from Wright earlier, Obama made it clear today:

The person that I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years ago. His comments were not only divisive and destructive, but I believe that they end up giving comfort to those who prey on hate, and I believe that they do not portray accurately the perspective of the black church.”

“They certainly don’t portray accurately my values and beliefs.”

“If Reverend Wright thinks that’s political posturing, as he put it, then he doesn’t know me very well and based on his remarks yesterday, I may not know him as well as I thought either.”

“I gave him the benefit of the doubt in my speech in Philadelphia, explaining that he has done enormous good in the church. But when he states and then amplifies such ridiculous propositions as the U.S. government somehow being involved in AIDS; when he suggests that Minister Farrakhan somehow represents one of the greatest voices of the 20th and 21st century; when he equates the U.S. wartime efforts with terrorism – then there are no exuses. They offend me. They rightly offend all Americans. And they should be denounced, and that’s what I’m doing very clearly and unequivocally here today.”

“It is antithetical to my campaign. It is antithetical to what I’m about. It is not what I think America stands for.”

Watch the video of Obama’s statements here:

The whole Wright mess has been one of the most unfortunate and ugliest aspect of this election season. I am not at all sure that the wingnuts will let this go, regardless of the fact that as John Cole put it on Balloon Juice, Obama kicked “Wright in the junk.”

Time will tell… At least one Democratic candidate for Congress is doing his darnedest to distance himself from Obama.

I wonder if Wright will stay down.

  2. I kind of relate to the DNA thing.

  3. Darrell

I’m wondering if that particular DNA was ever mapped in the human genome study?

I hope Obama nimbly pivot. He can use Wright as a metaphor for the divisive public figures we need to move away from. Politicians like Bush, and demagogues like Wright are keeping this country from coming together. Only from there can we handle health, gas, food, yada yada yada

i think this whole thing with wright and obama is a set up. wright says more really outrageous things so obama can really come out fighting. remember wright is a long time friend and mentor. obama is just throwing that friendship away? setup and your are it!!!!!!
