Putting The FISA Pressure On Obama

MoveOn is flexing some supporter muscle on Barack Obama over FISA… They want more from him than “I’ll Fight To Strip Telecom Immunity From FISA.”

Politico reports:

Insisting on a campaign promise that Obama would filibuster any wiretapping bill that included retroactive immunity for the telecommunications companies that let the government listen in, Obama’s allies at MoveOn are asking supporters to “call Sen. Obama today and tell him you’re counting on him to keep his word.”

Obama has said he’ll work in the Senate to strip that provision from the House bill, but stopped short of promising to filibuster the bill.

MoveOn members are a large sector of Obama’s base at this point and their endorsement no doubt help to carry his popularity among progressive. I’ll be curious to see if Obama will bend to their will.

Filibuster? Obama is no longer a mere Senator, especially with the Democratic tidal wave that November is shaping up as. A large part of his claim to fame is the ability to create “coattails”, and he needs to start throwing his weight around accordingly on the limited number of issues of this magnitude.

Twist arms on the left, make some very minor promises to Reps who are otherwise looking at at least two totally fruitless years, hold the vote and defeat this abomination publicly and cleanly.

If he doesn’t know how to wield political power to our benefit by now, when is he supposed to learn it?

Amendment IX [1791] ,still working ?

Good point Darrell. He is after all on the campaign trail. He is also the head of our party now. He should therefore entrust the filibustering to someone else with a powerful voice on the Senate floor. Let’s see… hmm… who might that colleague be? To whom might he entrust something as important as this?

weltec: Filibustering is what you do when you lack strength. Perhaps you’d care to expound on the fundamental weakness you see in Obama at this critical juncture.

  8. weltec2 says:

Darrell, my comment was not referring to any fundamental weakness in Obama.

The Blue Dogs and some other Democrats like Nancy Pelosi are supporting the Republicans on this bill. It is they who have the strength because they outnumber those who, like Patrick Leahy and Russ Feingold, oppose it.

It is only in this sense that Obama — if he decided to oppose the bill, as I believe he should — is operating from a position of weakness. Oh, that and the fact that he has already said that he will vote for the bill… after he as tried and failed to extricate retroactive immunity, of course… creating another position of weakness.
