John McCain Shouldn’t Joke About Iran

John McCain should give up the Iran jokes. Permanently.

Responding to a question about a survey that shows increased exports to Iran, mainly from cigarettes, McCain said, “Maybe thats a way of killing them.”

He quickly caught himself, saying “I meant that as a joke” as his wife, Cindy, poked him in the back.

Last time, it was also Iran. His singing about bombing Iran to the theme of the Beach Boy’ “Barbara Ann” drew derision from many quarters but a “lighten up” response from McCain.

One rather fascinating piece about this story, originally from Reuters, is that in spite of the tensions between the U.S and Iran under the Bush administration, “U.S. exports to Iran rose tenfold during President George W. Bush’s term in office.” Hmmm….

I shuddet to think about John McCain at the helm of America with his “acerbic comments” and his propensity for “sometimes firing verbally from the hip.” Another trait he shares with Dubya.

I’d rather have him firing verbal shots at Iran than real ones.

My concern, however, is that the one can so easily lead up to the other. And there is more than a little evidence that that is exactly what McCain is aiming for.

I could not agree more on all counts.
