What the Hell? Sarah Who? An Anti-Choice Creationist? What Scandal In Alaska?

If you are confused by the choice of a person who has very little political experience and no national experience, join the crowd. If you said, “Sarah who? Who the hell is she?” Join the crowd. Let’s flesh out a little bit of history of Sarah Palin.

A former beauty queen ( no kidding), she is actually, (no kidding again), the governor of Alaska. No, really. Previously she was the mayor of a small town, Wasilla Alaska. The population estimates of the town run, in media, from 6,500 to 8,000.  While the RNC and McCain would disagree, the fact is that she was running against an incompetent previous governor, and she ran on a reform platform, won her the race. [ Of course the fact she’s a stone fox didn’t work against her and won’t in the general election.] The scandal part of the headline is below the jump.

From Reuters:

Palin, former mayor of the town of Wasilla, is virtually unknown and untested nationally. That could hurt McCain’s argument that Obama, 47, a first-term senator from Illinois, is too inexperienced to handle the White House.

Her selection was welcomed by social conservatives who sometimes have appeared reluctant backers of McCain. An opponent of abortion, Palin had her fifth child in April despite a pre-natal diagnosis of Down syndrome.

Of course, McCain thinks he has a running mate to help pick up disaffected Hillary Clinton voters. This supposedly large group of women should give serious thought to the reality of life for their daughters.  Palin is firmly anti-choice and that should keep any thinking pro-choice voter from voting for her. Palin is a prominent member of Feminists for Life per the Wikipedia.

Now the fact Palin is a creationist might help finish off the support of any Hillary voter. Yep, a creationist who once advocated the teaching of ‘creationism’ in the public schools. She recanted her views the next day in a statement, presumably after the ‘substance’ hit the fan. ( See below) If nothing else she’s light on her feet.

From the Wikipedia:

While running for Governor of Alaska, Palin advocated the teaching of both creationism and evolution in public schools;[37] but the next day, she said, “Creationism doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum” and that she would not use “religion as a litmus test, or anybody’s personal opinion on evolution or creationism” as criteria for selection to the school board.[37]

Any Hillary supporter that votes for two candidates that have vowed to appoint Supreme Court judges that will overturn Roe v Wade is kicking Hillary’s foundation beliefs to the curb. The fact that the woman, Palin, is going be a heartbeat away from the presidency with an elderly president.  Palin is an avowed creationist on top of the inexperience and more . If a Hillary supporter votes for this unbelievable ticket they will be slapping Hillary in the face. They will be dishonoring Hillary Clinton’s foundation beliefs and kicking to the curb her entire life’s work.

Of course on top of it all, did anyone notice she’s in the middle of a scandal in Alaska? The whole story, told as only the Wonkette can is here. Here’s the brief rundown. Palin’s sister was in a one helluva fight with her ex-husband, a state trooper Mike Wooten. Apparently, as generous a word as can be found, she and her husband pressured the controlling commissioner to fire Wooten. When he refused she fired that guy and replaced him with another guy who would. Of course the second guy quit the job 2 weeks later. ( Maybe he was smart and saw the shit-storm coming.)

Of course she denied any wrong doing and even started an ethic’s investigation to see if anyone on her staff had exerted pressure for Wooten’s firing. Things didn’t go as planned and

And sure enough, the commissioner received a ton of calls from, uh, Palin’s husband and chief of staff. And then this one, where the idiot staffer mentions “Todd” and “Sarah”:

Palin said the “most disturbing” was a phone call Frank Bailey, the governor’s director of boards and commissions, made to trooper Lt. Rodney Dial in February. The Public Safety Department recorded the call, as it does routinely.

Palin, who said she’d only just learned of the call, released a recorded copy of it to the press on Wednesday. In it, Bailey clearly pressures the lieutenant.

Bailey told him during the conversation that Palin and her husband want to know why Wooten still has a job.

“Todd and Sarah are scratching their heads, ‘Why on earth hasn’t this, why is this guy still representing the department?’ He’s a horrible recruiting tool, you know,” Bailey told the lieutenant.

More info, where Palin denies knowledge of anything, including her chief of staff’s phone calls to the commission were new to her at the Anchorage Daily News.

[Personal Comment: Sure. Your sister’s getting legally whomped in a custody fight and she never called on you, the governor, for help. And, of course you didn’t know anything about what people that are directly beneath you are doing, especiallyy your personal chief of staff.  Riiiiiiiiiiiight.]

The DemDaily will sum up these developments in the next post.

Thanks for putting us in touch with information about Gov. Palin.  Even with the relatively little information we have about her, it’s obvious she is not a substitute for Hillary Clinton, who has a wealth of impoortant experience to her credit.  But we need to be very careful that we do not let our personal viewpoint distort any facts like the Obama campaign and news media did with Hillary for so long.  There is no evidence given that Palin is a Creationist, only that she suggested that people with that viewpoint be allowed to speak their views in school.  The Anchorage Daily News which you site says that a trooper investigation concluded that Wooten, Palin’s sister’s husband,” had told  Palin’s sister he would shoot their father if he got the sister a lawyer.” It seems that one staffer went too far in pressing for this state trooper who had threatened murder to be fired, but the news article does not show that Palin fired anyone for other than justifiable reasons.
It is very important that we keep our facts straight and that we are always as fair and accurate as we can be.

Palin is an evangelical Christian and if she believes creationism should be taught in schools, she’s a creationist. Plain and simple.

  3. Theresa: Anyone that suggests that creationism be taught in school is, by definition, a creationist. And as if that’s not enough she a dedicated and very outspoken anti-choice advocate.

Isn’t that enough for you? Do you want to repeal Roe3 v. Wade? That’s John McCain’s goal and hers. Goddamn, that should be a deal breaker. That article was fully sourced. You are the one ‘spinning’ it. It’s unconscionable for a Hillary Clinton supporter to even consider this woman qualified to be one heartbeat, one heart attack, one more bout with cancer away from the Presidency.

Pamela and Stuart,I didn’t know Palin was an evangelical Christian.  Certainly I wasn’t suggesting that she and McCain should be elected.  I understand from what I have read that she doesn’t think global warming is being caused by people.  I think it is one of the most important things we must address immediately and I am glad the Democrats are taking it seriously and want to act.  This aspect of the canpaigns should be helpful to the Democrats in getting the Catholic vote.  The pope spoke to hundreds of thousands of young people last year telling them to save the planet “before it is too late”.  Stuart, I don’t know if you really thought I was spinning the information or you’re just angry that the Republicans would put a woman in the vice-president slot as a substitute for Hillary when she would lead us in the opposite direction from Hillary in many important ways.  I don’t think I was spinning; I just want to be as clear and fair as possible and I do understand your exasperation..

  5. … and i just found out (per daily kos) that it looks like “her” child with down syndrome isn’t hers but her daughter’s.  bizarre.  we’re back in the 19th century.
