How Palin Screwed the Victims of Rape (revisited)

While Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla, rape victims had to pay for their own rape kits. __________ I wrote about this yesterday over at my place (from Feministing), and it’s nice to see the media — McClatchy and USA Today, for example — pick up on what is surely one of the more disgusting stories about Palin’s “executive experience.” Here’s USA Today: In 2000, Alaska lawmakers learned that rural police agencies had been billing rape victims or their...

Ten Post Round-Up: Thursday, September 11

Unlike some folks, I actually look forward to work to get me away from blogging (as opposed to looking forward to blogging to wind down from work).  It’s not the blogging so much as the news.  And, when politics are involved, I really need a night or two away from the blogosphere.  Truthfully, it’s kind of like crack to me and like any addict, I know that I need to walk away but, sometimes, I just can’t.  I know...

9/11: A Very Personal Memoir

I was in a coffee shop having breakfast when I first heard, from a pilot friend of mine, that a plane had hit the WTC. But she did look into the matter- with the backing of her church- and fired a librarian that was shocked Palin would ask about such a thing (the librarian was rehired after a public outcry). There’s an implication that if there hadn’t been an outcry over the firing, some books might have slipped off the shelves and into a bonfire.  Via Steve Benen:  Yesterday, ABC News’ Brian Ross moved the ball...

Lies, Lies, Lies

There’s still more discussion today on the “lipstick on a pig” kerfluffle and how the “controversy is ginned up, a fraud, a lie.” Michael Kinsley points out on the WaPo that continuing to discuss it is “falling into the trap that McCain’s people have set and perpetuating this ridiculous controversy,” but he says: the routine acceptance of obvious lies now corrodes our politics as much as the money that was the subject of McCain’s famous act of Republican...

FL Prepares to Screw Up (Another) Election

I, like many other Americans, have spent the past eight years trying to balance my love of my country and my hatred for its government. As a Floridian, I get to pull double duty on the land love, government hatred front. But surely this flatland that I love would learn from its past election season mistakes. Right?  Yeah, not so much:  State elections officials will resume enforcement of a controversial state law that requires Floridians to have their identification match...
