Christopher Buckley Voting for Obama

By: Pamela Leavey

Christopher Buckley, son of William F. Buckley, announced today on his blog, The Daily Beast that he is voting for Barack Obama. Buckley said:

Let me be the latest conservative/libertarian/whatever to leap onto the Barack Obama bandwagon. It’s a good thing my dear old mum and pup are no longer alive. They’d cut off my allowance.

Buckley goes on to make his case against voting for John McCain and explain why he’s supporting Obama. It’s a very good read: “Sorry, Dad, I’m Voting for Obama.”

  1. I think Christopher may be off base in wondering what his parents would think.

I watched the Buckley show for years as I was fascinated by his elegant use of language and the fact I was watching a TV show that was purely of ideas, concepts and conclusions. Oh, and extremely civil disagreement. That last art has been destroyed over the last 20 years. There is no such thing, politically, as civil disagreement.

I don’t think William Buckley could have found it within himself to support the McCain of the last few weeks. McCain isn’t a conservative. McCain isn’t a moderate Republican. McCain is a man desperate to win an election. The campaign lurches from one topic to another the only constant being Palin’s attacks driving crowds to a dangerous frenzy.

Christopher Buckley did the family honor  the right thing: He’s going to vote with a logical soundness and an eye on what’s best for America. I don’t know what mum would think of that but I’m willing to bet Pup would understand and support the decision.
