Toothless: The Watchdog Press That Became the Government’s Lapdog

PART 1 The president of the Associated Press (AP) was spewing venom at the Bush-Cheney administration for having turned the Department of Defense into a propaganda machine. Americans “expect honest answers about what’s happening to their sons and daughters,” Tom Curley told journalism students and faculty at the University of Kansas. Listing innumerable ways the Pentagon had advocated Bush-Cheney political beliefs, Curley questioned if the United States should “be trying to influence public opinion through subterfuge, both here and...

Smile, Wingnuts, Smile

In The Washington Times today — and I feel dirty linking to it, and even dirtier for having been on its website — Newt Gingrich asks the following question: “Where does the conservative movement go from here?” My answer is a simple one: Down the toilet and into oblivion. Newt, however, claims that it “has a simple and almost certainly successful future if it does three things,” one of which, the first one, is this: Advocate first principles with...

They just taken a 20 break for votes, it’s 11.24am pacific, and I don’t know if the embedded feed will pick up the live feed I was watching on MSNBC (Internet…not TV). I’ve NEVER seen House members treat witnesses with such disdain and disgust. These exec’s are getting the hell beat out of them. Period. That’s the only way to describe it. If this embed doesn’t go live in a few minutes then switch to MSNBC VIDEO for the...

Fox News, GOP Propaganda Organ

February 11, 2009 11:00 am
By

Not that we need more evidence that Fox News is in bed with the Republican Party, that the former is one of the latter’s key media outlets, a sort of GOP Pravda, but this is hilarious: During the February 10 edition of Fox News’ Happening Now, co-host Jon Scott claimed that “the Senate is expected to pass the $838 billion stimulus plan — its version of it, anyway. We thought we’d take a look back at the bill, how...

Kerry: A Race Against Time in Afghanistan

February 10, 2009 7:48 pm
By

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, John Kerry has a must read OP/ED in today’s WaPo on Afghanistan. Taylor wrote here yesterday about some of the latest news on Afghanistan.   Kerry has been passionately speaking out on Afghanistan for years now. In a speech in 2006, he “argued that more troops were needed” there and he still believes that. In his OP/ED today, Kerry says, “We must renew our original mission — and President Obama has rightly pledged to...

The stimulus package has passed in the Senate by a narrow 61-37 vote, with only three Republican Senators crossing the aisle: Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. Now it’s on to the House for final negotiations and with hope that the final legislation will be on President Obama’s desk within a few days.   Hearing word of the passage while in Fort Meyers, FL, where he was drumming up support for the stimulus plan, President Obama said,...

February 10, 2009 3:10 pm

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will be unveiling the Obama administration’s new bailout plan this morning. The plan is said to be a “three-pronged rescue program,” that is meant to “ease the credit crunch, including a public-private initiative to take bad assets off of banks’ balance sheets,” and provide ”mortgage loan and foreclosure relief and a new consumer lending initiative.” Also “according to the summary,” obtained by CNBC, “the Treasury plan also includes measures to ‘increase transparency and accountability to protect taxpayers,’” and...
