Must Reads of the Day

I’m a little preoccupied with business this week and trying to get ready to hit the road first thing Friday morning for another trip down to Massachusetts, so my posting here has been sporadic at best. I do want to point readers to a couple of links in the “must reads of the day” category: USA Today, LA Times continue to omit Bush Treasury’s role in AIG bonus controversy Lawrence Wilkerson: Some Truths About Guantanamo Bay Outraged Americans Want AIG...

AIG Chairman Spins

AIG Chairman Edward Liddy is testifying today before a House Panelon the AIG bonus debacle that has created a firestorm of anger throughout the nation. In anticipation of his House testimony, Liddy penned some sort of mea culpa for the WaPo trying to spin his way out of the debacle. And just incase you’re not angry enough over this whole ugly mess, the AIG staff would like you to know that they believe “We deserve this money.” Ah… the audaciousness...

The Painful Cost of Breed Standards: Mutilation Vs. Comsmetics

March 17, 2009 8:08 am
By

Legislatures in Pennsylvania and Illinois are considering bills that would reduce or eliminate what animal welfare advocates call mutilations, and what breeders and American Kennel Club (AKC) call “breed standards.” Because dogs are considered by state laws to be property, individual owners may currently cut and shape dogs’ ears (cropping) or amputate part or all of their tails (docking), often without a proper sterile environment or anesthesia. Ear cropping and tail docking, according to the AKC, are “acceptable practices...

Crooks and Thieves – All of Them

March 16, 2009 11:44 pm

Today, President Barack Obama vowed to try to stop AIG from paying out hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses to the very same executives that caused AIG’s problems. Tonight there’s a new report from Reuters that shows that “Citigroup Inc awarded Chief Executive Vikram Pandit $10.82 million of compensation in 2008, a year when the government propped up the bank with $45 billion of capital.” They are crooks and thieves… All of them. I’m mad as hell over...

Americans’ Top Economic Concern is Unemployment

March 16, 2009 10:26 am
By

A new CNN/Opinion Research Corp poll released today shows that Americans feel “unemployment is the most important economic issue facing the country today, almost three times higher than the 13 percent who felt the same way last April.” Inflation is second at 20 percent, followed by the mortgage crisis at 16 percent, the stock market at 14 percent and taxes at 11 percent. Last April, 47 percent of poll respondents said rising prices and the rate of inflation were...

The AIG Bonus Debacle

March 15, 2009 11:34 pm
By

AIG is paying out more bonuses and they are doing it taxpayers money… Aint that something? First they rob us all blind and then they give themselves all a bonus and ship some overseas too. Robert Kuttner (emphasis mine) speaks for me: In defending the AIG bonuses, CEO Edward Liddy actually said that you had to pay bonuses to attract and keep “the best and brightest talent,” in this case the very people who are costing America’s taxpayers $175...

Creating Solar Cities

March 15, 2009 10:13 pm
By

There was a great read in the NY Times on Saturday about solar power: “Harnessing the Sun, With Help From Cities.” We just can’t be dependent on big oil forever. Read the whole piece. It won’t work everywhere but it certainly does in areas where there is a lot of sun. We need to start taking better advantage of our local resources like sun, water and wind. Sphere: Related Content
