Petraeus ’12? Not.

March 15, 2009 7:34 pm

It’s seems so early to be starting the ’12 speculation, but apparently “General Petraeus is planning on delivering the commencement address at the University of Iowa in 2010.” The news has political junkies chattering about the intent. The chatter should be short lived however, as The Hill reports, “Contrary to a report on the Weekly Standard today (and that I highlighted here), Gen. David Petraeus is not speaking at the University of Iowa’s graduation in 2010.” Thank goodness… I thought...

Americans See 18% of Wealth Vanish

March 13, 2009 10:24 am

The WSJ reports that Americans have seen 18% of their wealth vanish in 2008. That’s a rather conservative estimate because they go on in the piece to note some folks have lost upwards of 35% of their wealth. I’ve talked to friends who have lost 40% or more in the past few months. Given this terribly bleak news about how Americans are seeing their life’s savings and investments disappear, coupled with news like the tent cities popping up around...

Madoff Pleads Guilty

March 12, 2009 1:51 pm

Bernie Madoff was in court today to plead guilty on charges of running a Ponzi scheme that screwed investors out of billions. His bail was immediately revoked and he was jailed until his sentencing. Considered at this point to be a flight risk, Judge Chin said, “He has incentive to flee, he has the means to flee, and thus he presents the risk of flight. Bail is revoked.” Bernie Madoff’s fraud was “a global scheme that ensnared hedge funds,...

Seymour Hersh: Describes ‘Executive Assassination Ring’

March 12, 2009 11:40 am

Eric Black at the Minnesota Post broke this story yesterday: At a “Great Conversations” event at the University of Minnesota last night, legendary investigative reporter Seymour Hersh may have made a little more news than he intended by talking about new alleged instances of domestic spying by the CIA, and about an ongoing covert military operation that he called an “executive assassination ring.” Read the whole piece, it’s quite a bombshell dropped by one of our greatest investigative journalists.  Also...

Hardball: Chris Matthews vs Ari Fleischer

March 12, 2009 12:15 am
By

It’s hard work… defending Bush: Chris Matthews managed to ridicule “George W. Bush for leaving office with one of the lowest presidential approval ratings in the nation’s history, for creating an economic mess that President Obama had to clean up, and for leading a foreign policy based on “truly frightening” rationales.” Whew that was some serious fireworks there… Shoulda grabbed some popcorn. Sacramento’s Tent City

March 11, 2009 6:29 pm
By

This is what the economic downturn has wrought on working class Americans: A tent city is burgeoning in Sacramento, Calif., prompting local officials to consider whether such an encampment should be made permanent, with plumbing and all. The primitive settlement sits in the shadow of the state capitol and is home to about 300 people who have no toilets or running water, creating unsanitary conditions that advocacy groups worry could promote diseases like cholera. With the downturn in the...

Twitter has been getting quite a bit of hype in the media lately. It’s been embraced by journalists, bloggers and politicians as a short and sweet way to communicate. Quick note: It’s a slow climb, but the approval rating for Congress is eeking it’s way back up to the highest point since February 2005. Steve Benen has more. Sphere: Related Content
