MoveOn Targets Specter

May 8, 2009 11:32 pm

Senator Arlen Specter’s short days as a Democrat have filled with a lot of turmoil and now “MoveOn.org , is resisting efforts to clear the Democratic primary field for Republican-turned-Democratic.” The group expressed concern over Specter’s vote against President Obama’s $3.4 billion budget just one day after defecting to the Democratic Party. MoveOn also cited comments Specter made in an appearance on “Meet the Press” last weekend suggesting he would oppose a public health insurance option that some Democrats...

Endangered Species?

Has the Republican Party become an endangered species? Polls suggest that only one-fourth of the electorate considers itself Republican, that independents are trending Democratic and that as few as five states have solid Republican pluralities. And the electorate is getting less white, less rural, less Christian — in short, less demographically Republican. Sphere: Related Content

From a pool of about seven billion, those hard-working geniuses at People magazine have managed to find the 100 most beautiful people in the whole wide world. And-get ready for the surprise-almost all of those beautiful people are rich American celebrities. Since 1989, People‘s editors believed they were given the divine right to anoint who they believe are the most beautiful people on the planet. The ethnocentric celebrity-fawning People editors are so secure in their self-imposed knowledge that they...

RNC members want Dems to ‘fess up to their ‘socialist ideals’

Some Republican National Committee members want to make “socialist” the official GOP slam for President Barack Obama and his party.  They’re pushing a resolution claiming the Democrats are out to restructure “American society along socialist ideals.” The measure, which its supporters hope to bring up at an RNC meeting this month, also invites the Democrats to “rename themselves the Democratic Socialist Party.” My guess is the Democrats will stay “Democrats.” Brian Moore says they should. “Obama is not even...

Sam Stein reports in the HuffPo that the House reached an agreement on Monday on establishing a “9/11-styled commission that would be independent of Congress and granted the power of subpoena to investigate the origins of the financial crisis.” Aides on the Hill said that the House will likely vote on the measure Wednesday, adding that the chances of passage were high. The office of the bill’s cosponsor, Congressman Darrell Issa, said the legislation would be similar to that recently...

Speaking of Health Care Reform

May 4, 2009 11:14 pm

In my last post, I noted the health care reform conference call that Howard Dean was on tonight. Speaking of health care reform, the Center for American Progress reports that more Americans are “losing health insurance every day” during the recession. Employers are shedding hundreds of thousands of jobs every month—just last month employment declined by 663,000—and the number of uninsured Americans continues to rise. Sixty-two percent of the American public believes that the current economic turmoil makes it...

Howard Dean Talks Health Care Reform

May 4, 2009 10:00 pm

My friend Ellen Beth Gill at Ellen of the Tenth, live blogged Howard Dean’s conference call earlier on health care reform. Here’s where we’re at via Ellen’s live blog but I recommend reading it all:  Senate finance committee meeting tomorrow. Go to moveon.org/publicoption. Write your piece. Ellen notes that her old pal and mine, “John Kerry is going to be delivering the comments to the committee.” Healthcare will ”happen because of you,” Ellen says.  The bottom line is we all...
