Too Soon to Give Up on Economic Policies
By: Pamela LeaveyThere have been a lot of calls of late to drop the stimulus plans put in place to aid recovery from the recession. Paul Krugman explains today why “It’s much too soon to give up on policies that have, at most, pulled us a few inches back from the edge of the abyss.”
Krugman notes that despite the fact that the “stock markets have been celebrating the economy’s ‘green shoots,’” the nation’s unemployment rate is still “very high and still rising.” All that said, Krugman says, “It’s way too soon to declare victory.”
The best and only course in Krugman’s opinion, is to “Stay the Course.” He’s right. We can’t fix the economy if we abandon the policies that are starting to bring results.
