Iran: The Whole World Is Watching

June 15, 2009 6:24 pm

There are Traditional Media on the ground in Iran including NBC, ABC and, if they haven’t been thrown out as was ordered yesterday, the BBC. Yet we get more information directly from the site of demonstrations, meetings and rallies from the bloggers and tweeters that are on the ground. Marc Ambinder suggests we approach this uncensored or verified flow of information in the same way a CIA analyst would. Be skeptical. Watch for other than contradict the first information....

How To Buy A Judge For $3 Million

June 14, 2009 11:15 am

The US Supreme Court ruling earlier this week gives a scary look at how justice in America is routinely bought and sold. The case — Caperton v. A.T. Massey Coal – began when Don Blankenship, chairman and CEO of Massey, lost a $76 million verdict in a fraud lawsuit brought by smaller rival, Hugh Caperton, in West Virginia. Caperton was driven out of business by Massey. Coal Baron Blankenship is not a man who likes to lose. He is...

Labor Activist Says Single Payer Health Care is Drawing Major Union Support

Louisville union activist Kay Tillow says a near empty collection jar she saw in a restaurant symbolizes the unfairness of America’s private health care system. “It had a sign that said, ‘Eric and Misty need help. Eric has come down with lymphoma and can no longer work and afford health care. Can you help?’ “There were just a few dollars in the jar. No family should be allowed to go under because they can’t afford health care.” Tillow favors House...

Righties Rape ‘Rape’

In case you missed it, I’m away from blogging while finishing a book project. But sometimes I can’t keep quiet in the face of madness. This is one of those times. (click for larger) Andrew Malcolm — who blogs for the Los Angeles Times — is a GOP hack. I’ve established that at length, elsewhere — a fading hack, former GW Bush campaign staffer and Laura Bush’s press flak in 2000, he crouches in his cubicle, waiting for the...

Waiving the Rules for Old Glory

Within a month of 9/11, millions of Americans bought American flags. Small flags they flew from their cars, trucks, and bicycles. Medium-sized flags they planted in their front yards, put into their home windows, and flew from recently-installed metal poles on doors and porches. Large flags they flew in front of their businesses. In our tragedy and grief we stuck together, the flag, a symbol of our unity and patriotism. It wasn’t long until commercialism in the guise of...

Clinton Orders Review of State Department Security

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has ordered a review of State Department security in the wake of  “Walter Kendall Myers, a 72-year-old former State Department employee, and his 71-year-old wife, Gwendolyn,” who were arrested last Thursday and “charged with illegally aiding the government of Cuba for almost 30 year.” One can’t help but wonder if the last administration was asleep at the wheel. Oh… yes, we do already know they were. Sphere: Related Content

Krugman Waxes Optimistic on the Recession

June 8, 2009 10:19 pm
By

Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman waxed optimistic on the recession today during a lecture at the London School of Economics: “I would not be surprised if the official end of the U.S. recession ends up being, in retrospect, dated sometime this summer. Things seem to be getting worse more slowly. There’s some reason to think that we’re stabilizing.” We can all hope he’s right… Sphere: Related Content
