The latest creepy meme in the blogosmear™ is that the President of the United States is unfit to speak to America’s schoolchildren. Why?
Because he’ll turn them all into “Communists,” and “Socialists.”* Seriously.
[* Don’t these geezers know that the last time “socialist” was used was during the first FDR term in 1933? And that most Americans don’t remember the Red Scare of the 1950s … and 1960s … and 1970s … etc. that kept the Republicans in power through fear and paranoia? But time wounds all heels, and now their “J’accuse!”s are almost as effective as accusing Obama of belonging secretly to the Manichean heresy — although they’ve just about actually, literally DONE that. OMG! He’s a Waldensian! Shh. Don’t tell them.]
Riehl-ly Impressive Punditry
The poster child for this slander has posted a most telling post today. Yes, it’s old Dan Riehl at “Riehl World” — a blog that begs a lot of bad puns, since there’s never been any Riehl-ity Check performed on old Danny boy.
Any similarities to Oscar Wilde’s “The Portrait of Dorian Gray” are entirely coincidental. Dan is a “Riehl” Man, and struts his macho as desperately as possible whenever possible.
Aside from the general creep out factor of a POTUS who feels he needs to address the children in such a prominent way, I will take exception to this below in bold. And some of the folksy, personal crap grates, as well. All things considered, I find the whole concept a bad idea. […]
You’ll need the insights and critical thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free.
Seriously: THAT’s what he objects to. Well, I can understand why he’d object to “fairness” and “freedom,” given his past as a Bush apologist (and apologist and apologist and apologist for torture, wars of aggression, wiretapping, treasury looting, etc. etc. etc.).
But what I can’t understand is how he’d be so stoooooopid as to say so in print.
Courage. (The bold is intentional.)
