Stories We Wish We Didn’t Have to Write–But Will

It’s a new year, and we’ve been trying to find new topics for our columns. In reviewing the columns over the past few years, we wrote against racism and animal cruelty. But, there’s still racism and animal cruelty, so we’ll still have to speak out on these critical social issues. We wrote about tolerance and the acceptance of all races and religions. Tea Baggers and ‘populist anger’

I wish the media would quit saying “populist anger” is fueling the Tea Bagger movement. It’s giving the real Populists a bad name. The Tea Baggers are on the side of millionaires. The Populists of the 1890s weren’t. I teach history, but I used to be a reporter. Good reporters dig deep when they write stories. They even read history books. With the economy still in miserable mode, I thought this was a great way to save money: A Financial Fast.  Part of the fast is lay off using plastic, and the reasoning is very sound: Curtailing your consumption is just one part of the fast.
