Conservatives: Legislation To Block Federal Healthcare Reform Mandates Spreads To 38 States

March 13, 2010 6:38 pm
By

With Democrats moving ever-closer to moving healthcare reform across the legislative finish line, initiatives to block that reform on the state-level have expanded to 38 states, according to a conservative organization promoting the so-called Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act. Virginia earlier this month became the first state in the nation to enact legislation that would block a federal mandate that all Americans purchase health coverage. Such a mandate is a key component of the reform legislation now...

Fair Sentencing? Crack Punishment Would Still Be Nearly 20 Times Worse Under Senate Compromise

March 12, 2010 11:10 pm
By

It’s called the Fair Sentencing Act, and it would have eliminated what has been a decades-long vast disparity in how those convicted of crack cocaine offenses receive punishments much more harsh than those convicted of powder cocaine crimes. Now, perhaps, it ought to be more honestly renamed the “Not So Unfair Sentencing Act,” or the “Still Unfair, But Not As Bad Sentencing Act,” since the Democrats had to accommodate a compromise with Republicans that still makes crack cocaine sentencing...

This is how we are manipulated via the new (and formerly the old, remember, the Vince Foster sleaze was pushed PRE-internet) media.

Capitol Idea: Stay Classy, Eric Massa

March 11, 2010 8:48 pm
By

Just three weeks ago, Eric Massa was a scrappy freshman congressman, rallying liberals to fight for single-payer health care. Now, as I write this, it’s just a day after he resigned the House seat that he worked so hard to win, and he’s on right-wing talker Glenn Beck’s show as a friendly guest. It’s a turn of events that is equally bizarre and sad to contemplate.  It proves the old political adage that any fool can get elected to Congress but the...

Trying To Change The Senate Climate: Reid ‘Wants Bill Soon,’ But Carbon Regulation Plans Still Stalled

March 11, 2010 5:16 pm

If healthcare reform is shaping up as the equivalent of political combat in the Senate, then consider the issue of climate change as its Cold War. Legislation to limit greenhouse gas emissions through a new cap-and-trade system has languished in the Senate for the better part of a year. The bill has gone nowhere, despite the best efforts of supporters who keep the flame alive, and occasional assurances of progress from the lawmaker taking the lead on the bill...

CNN gets Astroturfed in story on Astroturf

The claim? That a “tea party” candidate in Nevada is a ‘ringer’ for Harry Reid, to split Republican opposition. But here’s the festering stinker in the tale by CNN : Sphere: Related Content

Inside A ‘Black Box’: Senator Coaxes Secrets From Toyota, As House Members Pose More Questions

March 9, 2010 10:55 pm
By

Toyota executives last week backed down under the glare of congressional scrutiny, saying that they would allow data from one of their vehicle “black boxes” to be read in order to try to shed light on the fatal unintended acceleration plaguing the embattled automaker. Toyota previously had denied a request by the parents of Chris Eves, 29, of Bellingham, Wash., who died in 2007 in a case of what could have been unintended acceleration. Meanwhile, lawmakers Friday also fired...

Razorback Labor Union Lines Up Behind Blanche Lincoln’s Democratic Senate Challenger

March 8, 2010 9:41 pm
By

The Arkansas members of a large U.S. labor union Monday announced their support of Lt. Gov. Bill Halter in the U.S. Senate primary challenge to incumbent Democrat Blanche Lincoln. The backing of the United Steelworkers (USW) members in the Natural State adds a dimension to the Halter campaign, which up to now, had attracted support largely from groups on the Left from beyond Arkansas. Such groups have been raising large sums for Halter’s insurgent campaign, aimed at toppling the...
