Sanders Cites Olbermann Suspension in Bid to Block NBC-Comcast Merger

November 8, 2010 9:53 pm

A prominent progressive senator is citing MSNBC’s decision to suspend on-air personality Keith Olbermann as grounds to put the brakes on a merger between the network’s parent company and cable giant Comcast Corp. MSNBC brass late last week suspended Olbermann, the host of the network’s flagship “Countdown” program, for making political donations to Democratic candidates in violation of NBC News policy. That suspension will end Tuesday, when Olbermann is expected to return to the airwaves. “I want to take...

Capitol Idea: The Good News Behind The Olbermann Suspension

November 6, 2010 1:35 pm

Let’s start by being perfectly clear about Keith Olbermann’s suspension from MSNBC for his political contributions to Democrats. Being suspended “indefinitely” doesn’t mean forever. Olbermann is one of MSNBC’s signature personalities, and his “Countdown” programs is one of the network’s flagships. It simply can’t afford to be parted too long from one of its biggest stars. That said, it’s entirely appropriate for Olbermann to see some penalty for his transgression against NBC News policy. Olbermann’s liberal colleague, Rachel Maddow,...

Capitol Idea: Enter Sam Rayburn’s Ghost, Or Prepare For Hand-to-Hand Combat In the House

You’ve got to hand it to Nancy Pelosi. After Tuesday’s rout, in which the Democrats lost their majority and with it, Pelosi’s hold on the speaker’s gavel, Pelosi could have just slipped away into history. She could have done as Newt Gingrich did at the end of his speakership in 1999, resigning his seat and walking away. Or she could have followed her immediate predecessor, Dennis Hastert, who gave up leadership but simply stayed on in the House to...

2010 Seen Through Different Lenses: GOP Sees ‘Rebuke,’ While Top Democrat Urges Cooperation

November 3, 2010 5:19 pm

Democrats and Republicans, unsurprisingly, saw the results of Tuesday’s election in starkly different terms. Conservatives were more likely to see in the GOP wave a new mandate to govern from the right. The top Senate Democrat, however, read the message from voters as a greater need for lawmakers from both sides to work more closely together. The GOP, as expected, won well more than enough seats to recapture control of the House of Representatives but fell short of taking...

Dems Hold Senate Control

November 3, 2010 8:08 am

The 2010 election results are in and although Democrats lost control of the House they did manage to retain control of the Senate. Here’s the quote of the day from Senator John Kerry, on the Senate results and especially Harry Reid’s victory in Nevada:   “Politico was wrong, Huffington Post was wrong, hell, all the pundits were wrong.  Harry Reid isn’t just Dracula, he isn’t just Lazarus, he’s our Leader and our whole caucus is thrilled that he’s unbreakable...

Capitol Idea: The Other Reason I Want Democrats To Win on Tuesday

November 2, 2010 9:30 am

It shouldn’t come as any surprise to regular readers of this space to know that I’ll be pulling for the Democrats in the Tuesday elections. First of all, as I’ve written about here, I support Democrats on the merits. Although often imperfect, the economic and reform programs they offer are much more likely to benefit the lower- and middle-income Americans who need help most during this time of protracted downturn. The Republican alternatives, meanwhile, will do much more harm...
