This is a simply unbelievable and stunning tragedy…  Arizona Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head today at a public event held outside of a Safeway grocery store in Tucson. Ms. Giffords, 40, was shot in the head, the witnesses said. She was taken to the University Medical Center in Tucson, where a spokeswoman, Darci Slaten, said around 1 p.m. local time that she was in surgery. At a news conference several hours later, an official with the...

Organizing For America Fundraises Ahead Of House Healthcare Repeal Battle

January 8, 2011 11:27 am

As Democrats gird for battle in advance of next week’s planned House vote to repeal last year’s healthcare reform law, an organization with strong ties to President Obama is soliciting funds to defend the president’s signature achievement. Leaders of the new GOP House majority have set Wednesday to vote to repeal healthcare reform, which conservatives mockingly refer to as “Obamacare” and deride as a government takeover of healthcare. Now under the Republican leadership of Chairman David Dreier of California,...

1st GOP Vote Cuts Jobs, Union Chief Says

January 7, 2011 8:39 pm
By

Although Republicans campaigned on putting Americans back to work, the first vote the new GOP-led House took will actually cut jobs, according to one labor leader. Contained within the package of House rules Republicans adopted Wednesday right after voting in Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) as speaker was a provision that will “henceforth allow highway and transit funds that have already been raised to sit idle in a bank account, reducing investment in highways and transit, and subsequently destroying jobs,”...

Frat Boys and Navy Officers

by Walter Brasch When the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot two weeks ago published on its internet page three videos made four years ago by the executive officer of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise, it unleashed a firestorm that would sink the career of a decorated officer. The Navy’s actions to relieve Capt. Owen Honors of command of the Enterprise—he had been twice promoted after the videos were made—appears to be little more than a desperate attempt at damage control. Honors, a...

‘Keys’ Predict 2012 Obama Win

January 6, 2011 9:19 pm

President Obama will be re-elected in 2012, according to a historian whose “Keys to the White House” system has accurately forecast the outcomes of all U.S. presidential contests since 1984. American University history professor Allan Lichtman developed his system based on 13 “keys,” and he says that system currently favors Obama winning a second term, despite Republicans taking additional power in Congress this week. “At this point I project Obama to be losing only 3 keys for sure: Party...

Capitol Idea: Why Democrats Should Not Be Sad

January 5, 2011 8:02 pm
By

It would easy for Democrats to be sad. Watching Republican John Boehner ascend the rostrum in the House of Representatives and accept the speaker’s gavel from Nancy Pelosi, after all, could be downright depressing. To be sure, in most ways, I’d have been happier if the 112th Congress opened on Wednesday with Pelosi beginning a third term as speaker. But that is not to be. Indeed, as a progressive Democrat, I expected to be more morose, myself. But I...

Healthcare Repeal Proves House GOP Isn’t Focused On Jobs, Nancy Pelosi Says

January 4, 2011 5:29 pm
By

The announcement that the incoming Republican-dominant House will vote next week to repeal last year’s landmark healthcare reform law indicates the new majority already is taking its eyes off the issue of job-creation, outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi contends. The new House GOP leadership reportedly has set Jan. 12 as the day newly empowered Republicans will vote to wipe away the healthcare reform law that became a signature accomplishment for President Obama and congressional Democrats. The 112th Congress opens Wednesday,...
