The unfolding nuclear disaster in Japan has prompted Sen. Bernie Sanders to ramp up his opposition to the federal government issuing a new permit for a 40-year-old reactor in his home state of Vermont. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved a 20-year license extension for the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon, Vt., just a day before the massive earthquake and tsunami that crippled an identical reactor in Japan. The disaster in Japan severely damaged that country’s Fukushima Daiichi...

Unbelievable… “U.N. Approves Airstrikes to Halt Attacks by Qaddafi Forces.” After days of often acrimonious debate, played out against a desperate clock, as Colonel Qaddafi’s troops advanced to within 100 miles of the rebel capital of Benghazi, Libya, the Security Council authorized member nations to take “all necessary measures” to protect civilians, diplomatic code words calling for military action. Diplomats said the resolution — which passed with 10 votes, including the United States, and abstentions from Russia, China, Germany,...

As expected, Michael Moore, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka were in Madison, Wisc., to support and rally the workers in their fight against the union-busting governor and Republican-dominated state legislature. But, so were union members Bradley Whitfield, Susan Sarandon, Tony Shaloub, and dozens of musicians and singers, including Peter Yarrow who, as part of Peter, Paul, and Mary, was at almost every major social protest for more than 40 years. “This is not merely a...

This could well include Senate Democrats, who have stood in the way of H.R....

Politics At The Pump: Lots Of Rhetoric, But No Help — Yet

March 15, 2011 7:21 pm

As Democrats and Republicans continue to level charges and counter-charges at each other over the rising price Americans are paying to fill up at the gas pump, President Obama addressed the issue head on Monday. But while Obama says “we are prepared to tap” the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to increase fuel supplies and bring down prices, the president declined to pull the trigger, or be terribly specific on when he might do so. Meanwhile, a House Democrat...
