Japan’s Nuclear Nightmare

March 15, 2011 6:11 pm

Japan’s nuclear nightmare continues today as a small crew of technicians remaining onsite braved both fire and radiation throughout the day in attempt to ”prevent three nuclear reactors in northeastern Japan from melting down and to stop storage pools loaded with spent uranium fuel pods from bursting into flames.” Apparently officials with Tokyo Electric Power Company are as clueless about how to stop the leaks, fires and meltdowns, as BP Oil was when it came to stopping the leak in the oil well in...

As Clock Ticks On Shutdown, Right Opposes Boehner’s Spending Bill

March 14, 2011 9:17 pm

The hard line GOP House Speaker John Boehner has taken in the impasse with Democrats over the federal budget appears not to be hard enough for some prominent congressional Republicans. With a deadline looming to agree to a federal budget by Friday, or face a government shutdown, Boehner proposed new legislation that would keep the government running an additional three weeks, and slash an additional $6 billion from federal spending. The House last month approved a spending bill to...

P.J. Crowley Speaks Truth

March 14, 2011 10:57 am

Yesterday, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley, stepped down in the wake of the controversy about his public statement at a small gathering at MIT last week, ”that treatment of Wikileaks suspect Pfc. Bradley Manning in military detention has been “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.”” P.J. Crowley was right to speak the truth on the mis-treatment of Bradley Manning, and now the Obama administration must own this mis-treatment and not brush it under the rug as attempted by President Obama during a...

Think Tank: Democrats’ Cuts Are Deep, Too; GOP Rationale For Cuts ‘Not True’

March 13, 2011 9:53 am
By

In the battle over the federal budget, Democrats have portrayed Republican cuts as “reckless,” while terming their own reductions as milder and smarter. But the Democrats’ own plan also would cut deeply into federal spending, according to a new think tank analysis. House Republicans last month approved a spending bill which would slash $92 billion below 2010 levels from a wide swath of federal programs, according to the analysis from the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), a...

Tax Breaks vs. Budget Cuts

This really informative Info Graphic from Center For American Progress has been making the rounds on the blogosphere in recent days: It all boils down to a class war… the rich get richer, thanks to the Republicans and if they have their way they’ll keep the poor down and under their thumbs. Don’t let it happen. The Democratic Party is turning Wisconsin into a win for the party, because it’s galvanizing the little people to stand up and fight...

Partial Nuclear Meltdown in Japan

March 12, 2011 6:42 pm
By

There’s been a partial meltdown at one of the nuclear reactors struck by the earthquake in Japan. Apparently, a little radiation leaked into the atmosphere is not to be construed as critical, just worrisome… WTF??? It’s really a stunning disaster that I can only stress again should be serious food for thought here in the United States, where we have nuclear power plants built along fault lines. Here’s the latest news on what’s being done to prevent a complete...

Japan’s Earthquake and Nuclear Power

March 11, 2011 9:43 pm
By

In the hours after Japan’s 8.9 earthquake the widespread destruction is coming to light. There are now more than 1,000 feared dead in Japan’s northeast. Most troubling in the news is the pending meltdown at two of Japan’s nuclear plants where five nuclear reactors have lost their cooling ability and widespread evacuations have been ordered because radiation levels have surged. Edwin Lyman, a senior scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, which opposes nuclear energy, told msnbc.com that TEPCO was facing a...
