Capitol Idea: ‘What We Cut is Much More Important Than How Much We Cut’

April 8, 2011 2:38 pm

With the potential for a government shutdown growing ever-more-certain by the hour, one might conclude that Democrats and Republicans are arguing over a lot of money – and, certainly, tens of billions of dollars would be a whole lot of money for you or me. But in terms of the overall federal budget, the debate has bogged down over what really is a minuscule amount. How, then, are we facing the possibility of the first federal shutdown in 15 years?...

A Crock Pot Tax-Exempt Idea

A wall of suffocating heat nearly vaporized me as I walked into Marshbaum’s house. In the kitchen was a portable kiln spewing fiery venom that was curling the linoleum. In the den, wildly pumping a potter’s wheel flinging clay all over the room, was Marshbaum. “Got a new hobby?” I asked from a puddle of water that I assumed was what was left of my body. “Hobby, nothing!” shouted Marshbaum over the noise. “This is my path to fame...

Tea Party’s ‘Extreme Social Agenda’ Now Fueling Shutdown, Majority Leader Says

April 7, 2011 2:19 pm

Debate over federal spending levels no longer is driving the federal government toward an expected shutdown, according to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. It’s turned into a deadlock over a raft of conservative policy “riders” that Republicans have insisted be a part of a budget bill, the Nevada Democrat says. Republicans have been pushing to attach non-budget legislation they favor — such as abolishing funds for Planned Parenthood and curtailing pollution enforcement at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) —...

No Budget Deal… Still

April 6, 2011 11:13 pm

John Boehner needs to stop crying and step up to the plate and make some concessions and finalize the budget. Enough is enough. This is absurd. Maybe if Boehner wasn’t dicking around with the budget his approval rating would not have “dropped a net 18 points already since the beginning of January.” Read that and weep Boehner… And then get your freakin party members to the table with the president and finalize this budget so America can get back to business....

Rep. Paul Ryan’s FY 2012 Budget ‘Will Not Pass The Senate,’ Democrat Promises

April 6, 2011 4:20 pm

Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget plan for the next federal fiscal year will be dead-on-arrival in the Senate, a Democratic senator is vowing. Ryan, the Wisconsin Republican who chairs the House Budget Committee, unveiled a budget proposal Tuesday that, as expected, would cut deeply into Medicare, Medicaid and other federal programs. Ryan released his spending plan for the 2012 federal fiscal year that begins October 1 even as Democrats and Republican continue to wrangle over a budget for the current...

It was announced yesterday that President Obama has chosen Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz as the new chair of  the DNC. She will succeed Tim Kaine, who announced earlier Tuesday that he will run for U.S. Senate from Virginia. The committee announced the choice in an email to members from Vice President Joe Biden. “In selecting Debbie to lead our party, President Obama noted her tenacity, her strength, her fighting spirit and her ability to overcome adversity,” Biden wrote. “President Obama...

Obama: ‘Nobody gets 100 percent’

April 5, 2011 5:25 pm

President Obama held a press conference today after his meeting on the budget with House Speaker John Boehner. In his press conference he made it clear that the Republican party will not get the budget 100% their way. “Nobody gets 100 percent,” Obama said, as if he need to lay out reality to a group of spoiled children: John Boehner in his own press conference said “his side was determined not to be boxed in.” So no one is budging...

Nice Work If You Can Get It

April 4, 2011 9:26 pm

Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin could care less about state workers who are in the union, but apparently he doesn’t mind helping out a big donor’s son with a big paying job, that he’s not even qualified for: Just in his mid-20s, Brian Deschane has no college degree, very little management experience and two drunken-driving convictions. Yet he has landed an $81,500-per-year job in Gov. Scott Walker’s administration overseeing environmental and regulatory matters and dozens of employees at the...
