Sen. Schumer: On Economy, Boehner Not Entitled To ‘His Own Facts’

May 12, 2011 3:38 pm

The fiscal policies that House Speaker John Boehner demands are divorced from economic reality, according to an array of commentators and data. In a major speech Monday night in New York, the Ohio Republican called for “cuts of trillions, not just billions” while simultaneously taking his traditional hard line against any tax increases. Boehner outlined what are expected to be GOP demands to be met if congressional Republicans are to allow an increase in the federal debt limit. That...

Bush Policies Continue to Drive Large Projected Deficits

May 12, 2011 11:15 am

Last Saturday at a townhall meeting at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Senator John Kerry in speaking about the “huge deficit” our country is dealing with, told the crowd that “our friends in Washington are quick to forget where that came from.” It is what former president Bush left us, Kerry noted. And, Kerry is, of course, right. The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities has released a new report that outlines more on what Kerry said on Saturday about the Bush...

Popups Are Back

in this model, the idea that "free" advertising-supported content becomes a mandatory sales pitch because you cannot disable flash, java and javascript as easily as you disabled the old popups of the Aughts, well, you are not, therefore, a customer. You are a victim.

Catholic Academics Criticize Boehner

May 11, 2011 10:56 pm

Speaker of the House Republican John Boehner may have grown up in a Roman Catholic family, but a large groups of Catholic academics doen’t feel his politics are in keeping with his faith… More than 75 professors at Catholic University and other prominent Catholic colleges have written a pointed letter to Mr. Boehner saying that the Republican-supported budget he shepherded through the House will hurt the poor, the elderly and the vulnerable, and that he therefore has failed to...

It’s up to Congress now to tackle the thorny issue of immigration reform after President Obama made his case Tuesday standing on the U.S. border, according to reform supporters. Obama traveled to the border at El Paso, Texas to call for enactment of comprehensive immigration reform, an issue that both Obama and his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush, have so far been unsuccessful in accomplishing. “So one way to strengthen the middle class in America is to reform the...

Kerry Was Right Before Nader

May 10, 2011 6:20 pm

Mike Amato writes on the Huffington Post today that “Ralph Nader Was Right… Again” on 9/11 and Bin Laden. Amato links to my post here from a few days that includes a video of Lawrence O’Donnell claiming “Kerry Was Right About Everything,” and he makes the claim that Nader was “right” on how to do with terrorism, before Kerry was:  Democrats are now cheering the vindication of Senator John Kerry for saying in 2004 that the war on terror...

Capitol Idea: Obama Needs to Get Gutsy at Home

May 10, 2011 4:15 pm
By

White House counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan called President Obama “gutsy” for his decision to order the strike that ended with Osama bin Laden becoming a corpse. The daring mission to get bin Laden led Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne to praise Obama as “bold.”. It’s great, of course, to see the president act so decisively in the national interest. It would be helpful, though, if the president wouldn’t restrict his gutsiness to signing off on commando raids in Pakistan....

Schwarzenegger and Shriver Announce Separation

Late last night, it was announced that former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, have separated.   Maria Shriver has moved out of their Brentwood mansion, as the two decide what is next for their 25-year marriage. Shriver is reported to have been residing apart from Schwarzenegger for a few weeks. The former California “first couple confirmed the separation in a joint statement released Monday after questions from The Times.” This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of...
