We pick up our narrative, dear reader, after yesterday’s foray into the fundamentally juvenile sniggering about penii that has infected the mediasphere like a bad case of the clap. And we return to the question: Who is the anonymous blogger who posted the original tweeting penis story on Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government website?
The 101st Chairborne Moves Inland
We only need to go back to Weekly Standard editor Michael Goldfarb’s 2007 called-for and enabled blog swarm attacking the New Republic for publishing stories of what was REALLY going on in Iraq, managing to “out” and publicly and militarily humiliate Scott Thomas Beauchamp to see how this works…
(Beauchamp’s sergeant is now serving time in a Federal penitentiary for having murdered, execution-style, Iraqi civilians.)
The “truth” was maintained by the flying monkey corps that what Beauchamp had written about our Brave, Noble Troops COULD NOT POSSIBLY BE TRUE, and, therefore, he and the New Republic should be punished. The end result was that Beauchamp was subjected to seven kinds of hell (serving in combat), while the New Republic cravenly backed away from him and issued the usual rationalizations and mea culpas. William Kristol clapped his hands together in glee. Goldfarb was hired as Internet Communications honcho for the John McCain campaign, and NOT ONE OF THE BASTARDS responsible for this meaningless waste of time and media resources in the phony firestorm was ever held accountable.
One lone blogger tried to sound the alarm, but was ignored — even though eventually proven correct. The tactic worked.
The tactic was picked up after the 2008 election and refined, but never so much as by Andrew Breitbat and his barking moonbarts. Here’s the technique.
Now, it follows General Disaster’s Recipe for Conflagration:
Harangue, Harumph and Harass.
First, what you do, is you push forward a story, like, say, ACORN was helping pimps get their teenage hookers welfare and abortions.
Here, coincidentally is Publius’ second post for Big Government’s second day, the day they broke James O’Keefe’s ACORN story [emphasis added]:
Andrew Breitbart’s new political blog, Big Government, launched with a splash today, thanks to an investigative piece on ACORN. Could Breitbart, who worked as a researcher for Arianna Huffington back in the day, be following in her footsteps as an opinion blog rainmaker with a powerful one-stop shop?
Big Government got off to a big start today. Its main story was an undercover video taken by filmmaker James O’Keefe of what purported to be an ACORN worker advising a fake ‘pimp’ and his ‘prostitute’ how to avoid taxes and prosecution. ACORN, for its part, has condemned the video as “gotcha journalism” and demanded to see the full tape for proof that it wasn’t misleadingly edited*. As of 1:50 pm, there have been 3 posts about ACORN, one introductory post, and one post about health care — a little slow, but the ACORN bit is probably enough to give the site a good first day.
[* Uh, yeah, it WAS misleadingly edited.]
And here are the headlines that put the ACORN harangue and narrative into motion, starting on Thursday, September 10, 2009:

(Amazing that they could get together and write up the post so fast.)

On Why I Don’t Return Phone Calls from an Intrepid CNN Producer
by James O’Keefe Sep 11th 2009 at 11:25 am
[Note: here begins the “Harumph!” [harumphing added, harangue added.]:
As read on “The Rush Limbaugh Show”:
So far CNN has only reported on the breaking story on blatant ACORN CORRUPTION from angles that attempt to extricate the government funded “community organizing” enterprise from the extreme crime we caught on videotape.
First CNN pushed the false ACORN line that “[t]his film crew tried to pull this sham at other offices and failed.”
To set that record straight please check the Washington D.C. tape we dropped today at BigGovernment.com, which is also being aired on your cable news competitor with curiously higher ratings.
Now that ACORN lied to you, Jonathan Klein, what are you going to do?
Here’s what I have noticed from your coverage: You brought in the damage control crowd to FRAME the story. Before even airing our damning Baltimore video. You know your audience would turn on ACORN if you showed them the evidence. So instead you put your competitors in journalism in the crosshairs instead of airing a blockbuster report making massive waves elsewhere.
You even trotted out shameless Clinton era apologist Joe Conason to challenge the ETHICS of our expose. Unreal.
What about the ethics of those at ACORN caught on tape trying to help create a brothel featuring illegal immigrant age range 13-15 from El Salvador? (more…)
I will get into the Harumph! more in a moment. Let’s just follow the second day a little longer, shall we?]:

American Spectator: Big Media Ignores ACORN Scandal
by Publius Sep 12th 2009 at 6:53 pm
And now we’ve spent 48 hours haranguing the story, aided and abetted by many of the selfsame bloggers who pushed the ATTACK BEAUCHAMP meme in 2007.
You Harumph the story by sniffing about how AWFUL it is, and how TERRIBLE that the BIG media is IGNORING the “scandal” — a meme you’ve crafted and focused the narrative on, even to coining the name it will be called by, like, say, “Weinergate,” or “Climategate.” Or “lewd photo.” And you complain that it’s not being covered, EVEN IF IT’S BEING COVERED.
Here’s Publius moving by September 14 into full harumph! mode:
ACORN Story Grows But Mainstream Media Refuse to Cover It
by Publius Sep 14th 2009 at 10:27 pm
as he writes, in part:
The small scandal showing an embarrassing video of Baltimore ACORN staffers looking like they were giving tax advice on how to set up a brothel, is now national news. — This story has everything you could ever want – corruption, sleazy actions at tax-funded organizations, firings, government ties, sex, hookers. It is a network news director’s dream. Imagine the ratings!
Only almost no one is covering it.
This is the news media in the era of Van Jones and President Obama. The major outlets cover what they want and create the themes they want. When they find something inconvenient, they let it pass. They didn’t like the Van Jones story, so they ignored it. The network news media liked the financial entity known as Fannie Mae, so they ignored that scandalous organization for years. ACORN is getting the same treatment. (more…)
Except that now we know it was bogus from the start. The harumphing! continued until the media sheepishly (pun intended) t0ok up the planned and coordinated smear “story” and ACORN was stripped of all government contracts and bankrupted.
Which brings us to part 3 of the smear and sneer strategy:
What this means is that the rightie bloggers then nip at the heels of the media, like little dogs, to make sure they keep covering the story in the manner they want it covered, and to scare off the leftie blogosphere.

Now they’re whipping and herding the media with their narrative. And sneering at the media for not moving in their direction quickly enough.

by Publius Sep 25th 2009 at 4:22 pm
And, finally, it’s “mission accomplished”:
from the editorial pages of Investors Business Daily:
That’s why the Times got scooped by outlets such as Fox News, for which it has nothing but contempt, on revelations that led to the fall of community organizing behemoth Acorn.
The wound was self-inflicted, rooted in little more than the partisanship of protecting a favored president. It left the field clear for a couple of journalism students to show that Acorn staffers openly encouraged pimping, child prostitution, human trafficking, mortgage fraud and tax evasion.
It’s right there on tapes posted to Andrew Breitbart’s BigGovernment.com. Unlike the disdainful Times, Fox ran with it, toppling a behemoth of political power…]

by Publius Oct 16th 2009 at 5:53 pm
And they take on SEIU, unions, Van Jones, etc. etc. etc. So we skip ahead a little bit:
Except that all this false controversy was just that. ACORN was a threat to the righties because they registered young and poor voters, who tend to vote Democratic. Well, they don’t have to worry about ACORN any more than they have to worry about Scott Beauchamp or Dan Rather. Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes.
That’s Publius, folks. And that’s the strategy:
Works pretty well.
If you’d like to look at the manner in which this was played out in the Private Beauchamp spectacle, my posts are here.
If you look at the PRESENT kerfluffing, launched and fluffed by “Publius,” you begin to understand how Anthony Weiner made a grave mistake in thinking this to be “a prank.”
No: it is a deadly and coordinated campaign to politically murder you, Congressman. You need to take this deadly seriously.
And the Anthony Weiner “tweet” was posted by Publius early on Saturday morning: Posted May 28th 2011 at 12:24 am.
Funny that it would appear on Memorial Day Weekend, at the point of minimal national news coverage. For three solid days, the 101st Chairborne could relentlessly flog the story, interpreting the Rorschach Inkblot Test from a picture of somebody’s penis in their tightie whities (OK, grays) all the way to inappropriate predation on porn stars and underage girls. Quite a ways to go from a picture posted by an anonymous blogger, but then logic was never their strong suit.
Here’s the current “featured” article:
We’ve already moved from the Harangue of Saturday, Sunday and Monday (where very few mainstream or left-leaning blogs were heard) with the practiced yawp of the 101st Chairborne — many, if not most, veterans of the ACORN takedown of 2009-2010 and the Beauchamp takedown of 2007 — to the harumph of Tuesday onward. Some, like Powerline, are veterans of the Dan Rather takedown of 2004. Now we’re up to Harumph!

Does this, uh, look familiar?
Make no mistake folks, this is political special ops warfare. It is a form of media assassination, and it is sad that Jon Stewart and Anthony Weiner aren’t taking it as seriously as they ought. Weiner understandably thought it was a “prank” or a nasty little hacker’s joke. Nope.
I would add that in all three cases — Beauchamp, ACORN, and now Weiner — the lefty blogosphere has wussed out. Maybe this time they might actually try to cover Weiner’s back, but don’t hold your breath.
The initial narrative “lewd photo” from Publius is now the preferred identifying phrase for the photo in question. And “Weinergate” is mindlessly gulped down by a flaccid media, the same way they mindlessly accepted the poison phrase “death tax.” And the righties smugly presume that they’ve “hit the mainstream” with their little prank.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me over and over again and make me look more robotic than Pavlov’s dog?
Screw the fools.
Now comes the long harassment, nipping at the flanks of the cowed and submissive mainstream press, like a sheepdog herding an eponymous flock.
From Rightie-enabler and crap “journalist” Ben Smith of Politico:
June 01, 2011
[Anthony Weiner] also infuriated his colleagues in the New York delegation, who saw him as a newcomer to liberal piety and a media hog in the model of his mentor. And so his troubles this week have been greeted with a remarkable lack of sympathy.
“How much schadenfreude is happening because of this? A lot,” said one Democratic staffer. “In the delegation the level of jealousy of what he’s gotten out of the media is so high – it’s the subject of constant conversation.”
The staffer speculated on what Democrats widely see as an ill-judged cable news tour today: “He thinks he owns you guys.”
Another New York delegation insider emails with a notable lack of sympathy: “This should be a great day with Hochul’s swearing-in – this is an unfortunate distraction.”
Weiner’s unusual national stardom has been the rise of a political loner, and a bad moment, he’s largely on his own. [sentence: sic]
Here we go again.
Harangue. Harumph. Harass.
Blather, rinse and repeat.
Who is Publius? Why isn’t he accountable for his/her “reporting the facts”?
