In Wake Of Wal Mart Ruling, Another Try For Equal Rights Amendment

Following this week’s Supreme Court Wal Mart decision which dealt a blow to women’s equal pay protection, a House Democrat wants to try once more to enshrine gender protection in the U.S. Constitution. Rep. Lynn Woolsey of California held a press conference Wednesday to re-introduce the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which would ensure equality of rights based on gender would become a cornerstone of U.S. law. “It is with great pride that I stand with this bipartisan group in...

President Obama Orders Troop Cuts in Afghanistan

In an address to the nation tonight, President Obama ordered troop cuts in Afghanistan. Obama declared in his address that “the United States had largely achieved its goals in Afghanistan, setting in motion an aggressive timetable for the withdrawal of American troops in an acknowledgement of the shifting threat in the region and fast-changing political and economic landscape in a war-weary America.” The plan announced this evening will “withdraw 10,000 troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year”...

Capitol Idea: As Goes Comcast, So Goes the Nation?

It seems the captains of industry, finally, are waking up to the economic pain that the American middle class has been feeling for years. Don’t be alarmed. This is not some sudden, newfound sense of benevolence, or concern for us as people. Rather, the cable TV industry’s become worried that, while we may still want our MTV, we just can’t afford it anymore. Cable executives recently gathered at an industry event say their biggest competitive worry isn’t Netflix...

Cognitive Dissidents

The simplest definition of sanity that I know is the ability to know what is real, what is NOT real, and what is not known whether it is reality or unreality.

Wal-Mart Ruling Decried: From Too Big To Fail, To ‘Too Big To Be Held Accountable’

The conservative bloc of the Supreme Court finds itself under fire once again for a decision being criticized for handing too much authority to large corporations at the expense of average Americans. The high court on Monday blocked a huge gender-discrimination lawsuit against retail titan Wal-Mart. Just last year, conservatives on the court found themselves criticized for their sweeping decision in Citizens United, which granted corporations wide new influence in U.S. elections. Although the court was unanimous Monday in...

Talking Up Infrastructure Work, Schumer Wants To Create Jobs ‘Now’

Washington policymakers ought to prioritize “job creation now” over federal deficit reduction, a top Senate Democrat says, suggesting increased investment in national infrastructure as a way to do it. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, the No. 3 Democrat in the Senate, made his remarks Sunday on the CBS TV news program “Face The Nation.” Although much of the attention that Schumer received for his interview on the show has focused on the payroll tax holiday he proposed, he...

Olberphobia Grips Gray Lady

But you will note that as the toothed right and the toothless left yowl in the night sky, the Gray Lady (and so many others) keep shifting the "moderate middle" further and further in the toothed direction.

Dozens of Father’s Days; Decades of Grief

Christopher Kenneth Frison is seven months old. He’s too young to understand Father’s Day. And he’s certainly far too young to be able to get an allowance or a job to buy a card and a nice gift. He isn’t too young to be able to hug his father. But he won’t ever be able to do that again. Not today. Not next year. Not ever. His father, 1st Lt. Demetrius M. Frison, a parachutist and infantry officer, was...
