Capitol Idea: The Sad Pointlessness Of John Boehner

In this 2007 photo, Republican John Boehner stands with then-President George W. Bush and then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Were I John Boehner, I’d be deeply envious of Nancy Pelosi right about now. As House speaker, Pelosi clearly was in charge. And whether you agreed with her results or not, she got things done. She clearly enjoyed being speaker, but the office in and of itself was not what mattered most. What Pelosi wanted, and what she delivered, were accomplishments. She...

Dems Hit Back On RNC Attack Ad

July 13, 2011 1:47 pm
By

If you thought it was way too early for the start of the air war of attack ads in the 2012 presidential race, you would be wrong. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is hitting back against a new TV spot that its Republican counterpart says its airing in on cable and broadcast in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and New Hampshire. The GOP acknowledges those states went for the Democratic presidential nominees in both the 2004 and 2008 elections, but believes...

Arizona Senator Lori Klein Waves Her Gun In Reporter’s Face

With pals like that, Lori Klein easily swept aside the DUI, as a Republican running in a Republican year. One can’t help but wonder if her treatment would have been the same had she been a Navajo convicted of DUI in Phoenix.

Senate Budget Chairman: Social Security ‘Should Not Be Part of Deficit Plan’

July 12, 2011 1:52 pm

In outlining his proposal to reduce the federal budget deficit, the Democratic chairman took on Republicans. But, Sen. Kent Conrad, also implicitly pushed back against President Obama by seeking to take Social Security off the bargaining table. Although Obama last week expressed a willingness to bargain over the federal retirement program as part of the ongoing debate over deficit reduction, “Social Security need not be, should not be part of a deficit reduction plan,” Conrad declared Monday on the...

The effort by Democracy For America (DFA) comes amid signs of deepening stalemate in the budget crisis. Associated with former Vermont governor and ex-Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean, DFA is urging supporters to contact their members of Congress to reject any measures that would weaken the major federal...

Blood on the Lens

“If it bleeds, it leads” is local TV’s aphorism that dictates its belief that fires, car crashes, and shootings lead off the nightly newscast. These stories, of course, are more “visual” and easier to cover than poverty, worker exploitation, and the health care crisis. But, now and then, it’s hard to find an assortment of adrenaline-enhanced stories. And so it was that WOW-TV’s panicked station manager met with his news director late one afternoon to go over the final...

Debt-Limit Debate ‘Probably’ Already Is Harming U.S. Economy

July 9, 2011 3:10 pm
By

Its been often repeated that the impact to the U.S. economy would be catastrophic should Congress fail to raise the debt ceiling in the coming weeks. But even the possibility that lawmakers may fail to act on  the limit and throw the government into default may well already be causing economic pain, economic analysts say. A sign that that may well be the case emerged Friday as the Labor Department reported deeply disappointing employment data for June. Payrolls rose...
