It’s August and We’re Into Reruns

I need to give you the thesis that I’m going to be carrying around the USA this summer: We are at a crucial crossroads of history. Rick Perry and God

Republican presidential candidate, former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman took a swipe at at Texas Governor Rick Perry’s “criticisms of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke saying that Perry risks being dismissed by voters as someone not “serious on the issues.”" Huntsman’s not the only one who thinks Rick Perry doesn’t have a chance… Via a Facebook friend:   Contrary to Perry’s claims, God is apparently not endorsing Rick Perry for president. The Tea Party, mutant spawn of the Republicans, held their spineless parents and the nation hostage during the debt ceiling crisis, and is now demanding an even greater ransom. Flushed with what they mistakenly believe is success, they have launched an all-out assault upon the presidency. Their generals, fattened by Iowa corn and midway schmaltz, are Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, and Herman Cain. Sarah Palin, hovering near the battlefields to soak up the media sunlight, much like...

The Wisconsin legislative recalls are now history, and although Democrats fell short in their quest to retake control of the state senate, they can boast of having won a majority of the special races. Two state Democrats successfully defended their seats Tuesday night in the final recall elections in the Badger State. “These two wins mean Democrats have officially won a majority of the Wisconsin recall campaigns. Democrats won five out of the nine recall races, including several in...

I Knew a Guy Who Named His Dog ‘Cujo’

We are more the slaves of our language and symbols than their master, and this constant conditioning creates loyalties, fears, attractions and a thousand other effects that we are generally unaware of, but which are real nonetheless. Why else would they spend so much money seeing what "turns on" the amygdala if it didn't work? And there is a symbolic portion of our brains that refuses to vanish. We are powerfully affected by symbols and metaphor. Why else would so...
