Reid: Republicans Should Stop Rooting For Economy To Fail, Start Working With Democrats To Create Jobs

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pushed back Wednesday against his Republican colleagues over their opposition to a bill which would  put 400,000 teachers, police and firefighters back to work across the country. The plan to put teachers and first responders back on the job was part of President Obama’s American Jobs Act, which GOP senators effectively killed last week in a procedural maneuver. Obama, however, declared he would not give up and vowed to try to move individual components of the...

Zen And The Art Of Occupy Wall Street

The Occupy Wall Street protests have spawned nationwide rallies, marches, demonstrations — and meditation. Yes, you read that right: meditation. Friends from the Baltimore Shambhala Center, with which I’m affiliated, have begun regularly heading downtown to Occupy Baltimore — cushions in hand — to engage in sitting meditation. As a Buddhist adage says, “Don’t just do something, sit there.” Meditation helps to generate calm abiding and what we call bodhicitta, or the enlightened mind, a mind capable of boundless...

SPECIAL REPORT: For Left, Overcoming New Voting Restrictions Are Matter Of Principle, Equality — And Survival

Deven Anderson sees the widening net of state laws across the country that restrict the right of Americans to vote as nothing more than a re-emergence of the Jim Crow era of the 19th century.  These new laws enacted in states as far-flung as Florida, Texas, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Maine represent nothing more than 21st century equivalents of the poll tax or literacy test — the barriers of an earlier time that powerful whites set up to keep African-Americans...

Warning: Graphic Depictions

Sometimes the Left Brain (the one that controls the right side and "logical" language functions) needs to take a break. Luckily, the Right Brain (the "spatial" non-linear side that controls the left side of the body) is sometimes up to the task. Drawings from September and early October.

Step Right Up And Get Your Occupy Merch Here

My neighbor went to Occupy Wall Street, and all I got was this lousy yard sign. That’s not really true, but it could be. Official Washington Democrats may still be unsure of how, or whether, to embrace the burgeoning Occupy protest movement, but at least progressive organization has figured out how to cash in on it. Democracy For America (DFA), the group associated with Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor and ex-chairman of the Democratic Party, has begun offering Occupy-themed yard...

Under pressure, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has backed off an earlier demand that thousands of Occupy Wall Street protesters be evicted from Zuccotti Park. “This morning at 6 o’clock, MoveOn members, union members, community organizers and thousands of others gathered in Zuccotti Park to stand in solidarity with the people who are occupying Wall Street and to defend them from eviction by Mayor Bloomberg,” according to an email statement from the progressive advocacy group MoveOn.org. MoveOn.org circulated an...

OCCUPY WALL STREET: Separating Fact from Media

Newspaper columnist Ann Coulter, spreading the lies of the extreme right wing, called the Occupy Wall Street protestors, “tattooed, body-pierced, sunken-chested 19-year-olds getting in fights with the police for fun.” She claimed the protestors, now in the thousands in New York, are “directionless losers pose for cameras while uttering random liberal clichés lacking any reason or coherence.” (Several hundred thousand of these “directionless losers” are expected to attend rallies in more than 650 cities, Oct. 15.) Rep. Eric...

Birthday Cake At Occupy L.A.: Advocates Mark Century of Calif. Ballot Process

A consumer advocacy organization marked the 100th anniversary of California’s ballot initiative process at Occupy LA in downtown Los Angeles Thursday. Staff from Consumer Watchdog – whose founder Harvey Rosenfield wrote Proposition 103, a 1988 insurance reform initiative that has saved Golden State drivers $62 billion — celebrated by blowing out 100 birthday candles on a giant cake decorated with the California state constitution language creating the initiative process and serving cake to participants of “Occupy LA” on the steps of Los Angeles City...
