Growing up in the city of Detroit gun violence was a way of life. Watching the 11 o’clock news was a daily report of what happens when people use guns to fight over drug trafficking territory, domestic issues, and other senseless acts. In my life I have lost three friends to gun violence, one used his father’s gun to kill himself and the other two were killed by their girlfriend’s jealous ex-boyfriend. Living in an environment such as this, I have never understood the fascination with guns. My father, who works for our church’s private security force, has a permit to carry a fire arm. He would talk about going to the gun range but he never wanted me to … Continue reading

#365 Acts of Kindness

By now you’ve no doubt heard about Ann Curry’s response to the horrific shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Curry found herself asking the same question many of us have asked, “What can I do?” and responded by challenging her followers on Twitter to commit to 20 “random acts of kindness,” one for each of the children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Her appeal ended with the challenge, “Are you in?”  The response was overwhelming: “Yes, I’m in!”  people tweeted, with the hashtag #26acts. The campaign quickly went viral on social media, and the number expanded to 26 acts of kindness in honor of all who were killed at Sandy Hook. Anne Curry is best known as the co-anchor of NBC’s … Continue reading

Celebrating the Prince of Peace in the Land of Guns …a letter from Michael Moore

Monday, December 24th, 2012 Friends, After watching the deranged, delusional National Rifle Association press conference on Friday, it was clear that the Mayan prophecy had come true. Except the only world that was ending was the NRA’s. Their bullying power to set gun policy in this country is over. The nation is repulsed by the massacre in Connecticut, and the signs are everywhere: a basketball coach at a post-game press conference; the Republican Joe Scarborough; a pawn shop owner in Florida; a gun buy-back program in New Jersey; a singing contest show on TV, and the conservative gun-owning judge who sentenced Jared Loughner. So here’s my little bit of holiday cheer for you: These gun massacres aren’t going to end … Continue reading

Sandy Hook – Our Children, Their Environment

We cannot understand what happens in the universe. What is glorious in it is united with what is full of horror. What is full of meaning is united to what is senseless… – Albert Schweitzer She was the first student who ran out of the Sandy Hooks Elementary School, an un-named six-and-a-half-year-old.  She ran out of the building, covered in blood from head to toe, and the first words she said to her mom were, ‘Mommy, I’m okay, but all of my friends are dead.’ Somehow, in that moment, she had been able to act as if she was already deceased, no doubt saving her own life. Of those who were left in the classroom of first graders, she was … Continue reading

Groups Send ‘Robin Hood’ To DC To Promote New Wall St. Tax

A variety of activist, labor and other groups, banded together under the Robin Hood Tax Campaign umbrella, sent “Robin Hood” to Washington Thursday to promote passage of a new sales tax on financial transactions which is in place in more than 40 other countries. The stunt comes as Americans want Republicans to give up more ground than Democrats in the debate over the coming so-called fiscal cliff. Robin Hood attempted to deliver his resume this morning to the Treasury Department to apply for the position of “Secretary of Treasury, United States of America.” The position is currently held by Secretary Timothy Geithner, who is leaving the post as President Obama’s second term begins.  Blocked from submitting his resume, “Robin” spoke … Continue reading

Parents React to Newtown: Sales of Bulletproof Backpacks Soar

This is such a sad statement on our society that parents now feel they must protect their children by sending them off to school with bulletproof backpacks: Shame, shame, shame on the NRA for pushing gun advocacy so far that non gun owners fear for their safety and the safety of their children. Gun sales continue to rise in the wake of Newtown and parents send their children off to school with bulletproof backpacks. Absurd, sad, sick… Life is so precious. Our society is f*cked up right now there are no words! If folks need another reason not to shop Wal-Mart here it is: Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, said yesterday that it would continue to sell guns, including rifles … Continue reading
