Discriminating Taste: Racism in America–A Continuing Story

by Walter Brasch  For years, my father, a federal employee with a top secret clearance, carried a copy of his birth certificate when he went into Baja California from our home in San Diego. Many times, when he tried to reenter the U.S., he was stopped by the Border Patrol. My father had thick black hair and naturally dark skin, and the Patrol thought he was a Mexican brazenly trying to sneak back into the country by claiming to be married to the black-haired, blue- eyed, light-skinned woman he claimed was his wife. It was annoying. It was also annoying that once back home, he faced discrimination because neighbors thought he was Mexican. Because we lived in an urban area, … Continue reading

Wendy Davis Is In

Politico reports that “Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis and her advisers have begun informing influential Democrats that she intends to run for governor in 2014, according to multiple sources familiar with Davis’s conversations.” Davis advisers declined to confirm that she will enter the governor’s race, but Davis consultant Hector Nieto said the senator has made up her mind about 2014 and will unveil her plans next week. “Sen. Davis has decided what she will do and she looks forward to making that announcement with her grass-roots supporters on Oct. 3,” Nieto said. State and national Democrats have wooed Davis over the past few months for the uphill campaign against Republican state Attorney General Greg Abbott, the presumptive GOP gubernatorial nominee. … Continue reading

Byers Beware: The Fallacy of the False Analogy

We all remember that the GOP has claimed “media bias” as their eternal excuse for criminality, political debauchery and generalized cruelty ever since Tricky Dick lied self-pityingly that the media wouldn’t “have Nixon to kick around anymore” in 1962. Continue reading

Commence Out Cry: Kerry To Sign UN Arms Treaty Opposed by Senate, NRA

The wingnuts and gun enthusiasts aren’t happy about this… The Hill reports today that “Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to sign an arms trade treaty opposed by the Senate and the gun lobby as early as Wednesday.” The wingnuts are already crying foul… “This treaty is already dead in the water in the Senate, and they know it,” said Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services. “The Administration is wasting precious time trying to sign away our laws to the global community and unelected U.N. bureaucrats.” A majority of Senate oppose the treaty because it covers small arms, making ratification impossible in the short term. Good for Kerry to move forward with signing this … Continue reading

The Texas Wacko in the Senate

All ego… no hat… The Republican Senator from Texas, Ted Cruz is making quite a name for himself and everyone, including members of his own party want him to simply STFU and go away. Pompous, quirky and currently hell bent on taking down Obamacare, Ted Cruz is a one man Senate wrecking ball, plowing his way through whatever he champions knocking over anything and anyone that gets in his way. Be careful, because if you get in his way, he might just stomp you with his infamous cowboy boots. Little more than a month after Cruz was sworn in, Senator Barbara Boxer, a Democrat from California, likened him to Joe McCarthy for his conduct during Chuck Hagel’s confirmation for secretary … Continue reading
