I’m going to be talking about the worst kind of hate imaginable herein, so those with delicate sensibilities, please be warned: Caveat Lector.
Got your attention? Good.
Let me tell you a little story from college days, and then I’ll scare hell out of you.
David Duke was on the TCU speakers’ list. The lily-white administration realized what it would be like for a secesh school (TCU was founded by two ex-Confederate officers), whose athletic program depended on importing Blacks, to have a KKK Grand Wizard speak. They overruled the student-led speaker’s committee and canceled David Duke.
Being the troublemaker I am, I wrote to the school paper that we OUGHT to let the SOB speak. If what we knew about the Klan was true, it would be instructive to see through the BS.
I was a First Amendment absolutist then. Within limits, I still am. Because, as I came to realize, there IS no absolute regarding free speech — a hard-won understanding that the Supreme Court would be well-served by learning. You cannot yell “FIRE!” in a crowded theater. You cannot give away national secrets in time of real war*.
[* Which, I might note, is WHY I consider Bradley Manning and Edward Snowden criminals and General Petraeus merely a jerk–both of the former gave away legitimate state secrets directly impacting our relations with our allies, which had nothing to do with surveillance in the USA, which I find justifiable. But to piss off Germany by revealing that we, like everyone else, monitor our friends as well as our enemies, well, that’s an act of espionage that only aided and abetted Vladimir Putin at a crucial moment in history. Petraeus only shared inappropriate information with his mistress/biographer. There is a profound FUNCTIONAL difference.]
OK: in hindsight, TCU probably did the expedient thing. It never occurred to me because I had no weight of secession, treason and institutional racism on my back. But I would STILL have liked to hear David Duke. It would have been invaluable in the years to follow.
But it DID sensitize me to his situation, and over the years, I noticed that NO ONE ever allowed David Duke to speak publicly, fearing the effect of his slick racism and neo-fascism. Which, I believe, only HELPED him. Still, to this day, I have never see Duke allowed to speak his toxic nonsense in any legitimate media outlet. He is always paraphrased, placed in a prophylactic of media paraphrase, summarized rather than quoted. Has this worked? Debatable.
Which brings us to the journalistic crime of the day. Thanks to TIME Magazine. Now, consider the well-meant media censorship in a NON-Jim Crow America where Duke did NOT present a clear and present danger. And then consider Pamela Geller.
Pamela Geller: A Response to My Critics—This Is a War
Pamela Geller @PamelaGeller 7:37 AM ET
Pamela Geller is the President of the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) and publisher of PamelaGeller.com.
Some are saying I provoked this attack. But to kowtow to violent intimidation will only encourage more of it.
Sunday in Garland, Texas, a police officer was wounded in a battle that is part of a longstanding war: the war against the freedom of speech. Some people are blaming me for the Garland shooting — so I want to address that here…
Pamela Geller screamed FIRE! in a crowded theater. That is indisputable. Two men are dead and one officer is wounded. Only luck and a good cop prevented this from being much worse, but Pamela Geller’s intentional blasphemy toward a religion she utterly despises cannot be dismissed. But WHY in “God’s” name would TIME give her such a platform? The SAME TIME Magazine that followed the “David Duke” rule of suppressing the “FIRE!” screech of hate ideologues?
It beggars the imagination. Hell, they probably paid her, to boot.
A “promo” photo from when “little green footballs” was a rabidly
conservative site, before becoming an ANTI-conservative site *
[*from “anti-jihadist” site, Mark Humphries.com, “Irish. Atheist. Liberal-right. Anti-jihad. Pro-West. Pro-Israel“:
Charles Johnson’s blog Little Green Footballs (LGF) [sic] was the leading counter-jihad blog for years after 9/11. From 2001 to 2008, LGF was sometimes a daily read for me. It was where counter-jihad people would go to share links, expose jihadists and Islamists, attack the left, celebrate the killing of Yassin, the killing of Zarqawi, and the re-election of Bush.
And then the most incredible thing happened. Around 2008, Charles Johnson started fighting with everyone on the right. He started by making some reasonable points. But it got worse and worse, until he was fighting with every single person in the counter-jihad except himself. Eventually he left the counter-jihad altogether and turned LGF into a loony left blog. It is now the opposite of the old LGF.
I dropped LGF from my RSS feeds in 2009. Now I regard LGF as a loony left site. There is a car-crash fascination in seeing what goes on there. No sane people are left. I read Diary of Daedalus to follow and laugh at the fascinating madhouse that LGF has become.]
Make no mistake, Pamela Geller is “conservative” and Republican Mainstream. Her photo popped up at CPAC coverage for years. She was one of the loudest and most mindlessly vicious of the early blogosmear®, with her overloaded with Flash crap to the point of crashing your computer site Atlas Shrugs. Indeed, for her vlogging and insistence on showing off her cleavage, she has been known for years in blog circles as “Atlas Juggs.”
A vlog screencap.
Here’s the Southern Poverty Law Center on Pammy:
… in early 2010, a fortuitous gift arrived: An innocuous proposal by a New York City imam and his financier partner to renovate an abandoned building in lower Manhattan into a 13-story mosque and community center came to light. The gift was its address: 45-51 Park Place — two blocks from the site of the former World Trade Center.
Just then, a dazzling new anti-Muslim activist burst onto the scene: Pamela Geller, the well-to-do ex-wife of a Long Island used-car mogul who previously busied herself rearing her four children, writing blogs and posting slam poetry-style videos trashing all things liberal on her YouTube channel.
Geller had joined Stop the Madrassa and blogged often about the matter on her website, Atlas Shrugs. Blessed with sultry Hollywood sex appeal and a sassy, scythe-like wit — a personable Ann Coulter and articulate Sarah Palin rolled into one — Geller would ride the Park51 project protest to superstardom….
I don’t find her witty, attractive or anything other than David Duke with boobs. But to each his or her own, as they say.
As Charles Johnson of little green footballs became alarmed and ultimately rebelled against the institutionalized anti-Muslim hatred of the Right (I wish I could say “fringe-” or “far-” in front of “Right,” but, alas I can’t, and that is a sad commentary on the GOP and Conservative movement post-Usurper Bush), so, too, Pamela Geller took the entirely opposite tack: she became the hater of haters, the Über-hater of ALL Muslims and was transfixed and attracted to all the sick, twisted attention that came with it — to someone whose raison d’être in today’s celebutard-obsessed culture was and is LOOK AT ME! this was attention-whore nirvana.
NOT Pamela Geller pictured. A dramatization.
And now, TIME Magazine gives
David Duke, er, Pamela Geller a full page to get her hate freak on.
“Responsible” (if a bit paternalistic and patronizing) media kept David Duke off the airwaves. TIME Magazine throws open the gates to Pamela Geller, to explain how, in the face of an event INTENTIONALLY created to insult and provoke Muslims* SHE didn’t yell “FIRE!” and, even if she did, it was ridiculous for the people being ridiculed to listen to her.
[* The Garland, Texas site was chosen because it had formerly hosted a pro-Muslim gathering in years past, but the hatred of “jihadists” has morphed into outright religious bigotry that drawn ZERO distinction between Osama bin Laden and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. ]
Way to go, TIME Magazine.
Don’t ever expect me to buy another copy of your publication.
I already have plenty of toilet paper.
Let me explain something: even though I have a First Amendment right to draw a cartoon of Mohammed, I choose NOT to exercise that right. There is no REASON for me to do so, no more than there is a reason for me to dress up in White Sheets and march through Harlem, nor to dress in Swastikas and march up and down Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. If I did either of the former, WHO would not think me an ass, intentionally causing emotional distress and provoking justifiable rage? The First Amendment only says I have the right to say it. Implicit is the concept that I also am responsible for the consequences.
But hating minorities has always been a popular sport in America a sport I have spent a lifetime trying to see eradicated.
And Pamela Geller? Well, give her this, she comes across as the first Jewish Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan. And that’s some kind of accomplishment, if more than a little idiotically short-sighted. (Of all ethnic groups, Jews LEAST ought to be promoting ethnic and religious hate. It had well-known consequences in the Twentieth Century.)
I still haven’t heard David Duke speak. Not that I’ve gone out of my way to look.
Excuse me now. I have to go throw up.
UPDATE @ 2:02 PM PDT: Charles Johnson has a valuable history of Pamela Geller at little green footballs. Worth a gander.
UPDATE #2: Received a communication from Charles Johnson of little green footballs, regarding Pam’s T-shirt stunt:
… there’s an interesting back story on that picture of Geller in the LGF t-shirt; she wasn’t giving me a thumbs-up – she was crowing about winning the right wing Weblog Awards and beating LGF. So even though it looks like she was being friendly to LGF in that photo without the context, in truth it was exactly the opposite.
Here’s the post where she originally included that photo: http://pamelageller.com/2009/01/weblog-awards-shweeet-victory-baby-atlas-beats-lgf.html/
Confirming, perhaps, the immense personal charm of Ms. Geller.
