I’m not sure how this will all play out. We have indeed plunged “into the abyss.”

Talk about the need to disavow and denounce — After watching Olbermann’s special comment last night calling on her to denounce Ferraro, I think it’s time for Olbermann to call on Obama to denounce Rev.
The WSJ has an editorial today that runs along the lines of what Sean Wilentz has been saying in TNR (see here and here).

But for all of Mr. Obama’s soaring rhetoric about the nation’s need for a post-racial politics that “brings the American people together,” his campaign at times has seemed overly sensitive about race. It also seems to want it both ways. Mr. Obama claims that his brand of politics transcends race, but at the same time he’s using race as a shield to shut down important and legitimate arguments. [...]

Democrats have repeatedly touted the diversity of their party’s White House hopefuls. And it is true that a Clinton or Obama Presidency would make gender or racial history. Americans of all backgrounds can take satisfaction in watching the country field its first black Presidential candidate with a chance to win. But voters also want their would-be Presidents properly vetted, by the media and by each other. To that end Mr. Obama would do better to focus more on answering his political critics with specifics and less on questioning their motives by crying wolf on race.

PLEASE: Stop the Madness. Egalia nailed it on Tennessee Guerilla Women: “I don’t know how much more any of us can take of the ongoing national nervous breakdown.”

Hillary Clinton took a step in the right direction last night. In the wake of the video above, Barack Obama needs to step up to the plate and the DNC needs to step in and let both candidates know: Enough is enough.

It’s also when we get to see which of the many news stories that broke before and over the weekend stunk enough to stick.

Personally, I look forward to Monday’s because that’s when I get to find out what’s on Uncle Jay’s mind: Uncle Jay Explains the News – February 25, 2008

I know the Ten Post Round-Up is unlikely to ever be considered “stellar”, but I certainly hope you find something to propel your thinking:

1: The hits jus’ keep on comin’ with McCain…

6: Something to think about…

7: Incorporate police state tactics into your children’s playtime!…

8: Retain the proper amount of body fluids when driving in the carpool lane or face the consequences…

10: How GWB exploits the fear of terrorists for political gain…

A trip to outer space, might be a proper send off to a lot of our most prominent politicians and their cronies (let’s leave the earth to the “reality-based” community). Maybe they can all go on a really (really, really, really…etc.) long trip to find out, definitively, whether or not Pluto should be designated a planet.

And, then I woke up…

329 días hasta el final de un error…

Peace.

Clearly from the video above via TPM, Watson preferred to talk the hope line than policy. All well and good, but some folks still want more substance: Here’t the bottomline for me… I understand that Barack Obama is inspiring to many people. He doesn’t strike me in that way. At this point in time what inspires me is too hear a candidate talking about the issues. In ’04 I knew John Kerry’s stance on the issues, inside and out.
There’s varying opinions on whether or not Watson falling flat on his face is a reflection on Obama. Clearly from the video above via TPM, Watson preferred to talk the hope line than policy. All well and good, but some folks still want more substance:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Here’t the bottomline for me… I understand that Barack Obama is inspiring to many people. He doesn’t strike me in that way. At this point in time what inspires me is too hear a candidate talking about the issues. In ’04 I knew John Kerry’s stance on the issues, inside and out. When I hear people say well it’s all on Obama’s website, I know that the average Joe isn’t going to go looking for them. They just won’t and Obama supporters and Obama surrogates should know this stuff, in my opionion and not be caught fumbling in a national interview.

Watson got caught fumbling. Hilzoy thinks Chris Matthews didn’t do his job. On the contrary he asked what should have been a relatively easy question and the surrogate failed the test. Imagine… just imagine if that happens in the general election.

Hillary Clinton blasted MSNBC’s David Shuster today for his “incredibly offensive” on air remarks about Chelsea Clinton. Shuster, as noted here has apologized and even Keith Olbermann stepped up to the plate an issued his onw apology on behalf of the network last night.

But, Hillary Clinton spoke up today on the issue, telling reporters in Bangor, Maine, “I found the remarks incredibly offensive.”

Clinton also “she sent a letter to NBC brass that called for swift action against Shuster, who was suspended Friday by MSNBC.”

“Nothing justifies the kind of debasing language that David Shuster used and no temporary suspension or half-hearted apology is sufficient,” Clinton wrote to NBC News President Steve Capus, who apparently had already called Clinton to personally apologize.

“I would urge you to look at the pattern of behavior on your network that seems to repeatedly lead to this sort of degrading language,” Clinton wrote. “There’s a lot at stake for our country in this election. Surely, you can do your jobs as journalists and commentators and still keep the discourse civil and appropriate.”

The full text of Hillary Clinton’s letter is here.

Clinton also said in the letter, “I became Chelsea’s mother long before I ran for any office and I will always be a mom first and a public official second.”

And she told reporters on Friday, “I am a mom first and a candidate second. You know I can take whatever comes my way. That’s what I signed up for as a candidate and an office holder.”

Both of those statements really say it all, don’t they. The ever acid tongued Hart Williams who used to write here at the Dem Daily, apparently thinks my comment in an earlier post about this subject was shrill, because I said, “I know I sure as hell would be outraged if someone said something like that about my daughter, and anyone who thought Hillary Clinton and her campaign would sit back and let Shuster get away with this was dreaming.”

I used to expect from from Williams on subjects like this, as one of his favorite things to do in the blogosphere has been to rip the media a new one on issues like this. But now instead, a woman on the campaign trail should not defend her daughter and likewise other women who are mothers should not be outraged. Give me break. All women with children (young or fully grown) are mothers first. And that includes Hillary Clinton and me.

Quite frankly, I don’t think Obama would have stood for it and I know damn well John Kerry never would have stood for Shuster making a remark like about one of his daughters in ’04. Frankly, as I said here last night, I am appalled that members of the party did not speak up. Appalled and disgusted. But that’s sexism for you, isn’t. The good old boys have rallied about Obama, and in their fight to put him in the White House, it’s anything goes against Hillary Clinton and her daughter. Shame on them.

In my Late Night Reads last night, I posted a link to Taylor Marsh’s post on David Shuster’s contemptable sexist remarks made about Chelsea Clinton.

In my Late Night Reads last night, I posted a link to Taylor Marsh’s post on David Shuster’s contemptable sexist remarks made about Chelsea Clinton. The Clinton campaign hit back hard today:

Asked about Shuster’s “pimp” comment, Wolfson denounced the comment as “disgusting” and “beneath contempt,” adding: “It’s the kind of thing that should never be said on a national news network.”

Then Wolsfon added: “You have to question whether or not there is a pattern here on the part of the network.” He added: “Is this part of a pattern? I don’t know, but [it's] beneath contempt.”

Then, unbidden, he concluded: “I’ll say this. We’ve done a number of debates on that network…I at this point can’t envision a scenario where we would debate on that network given the comments that were made and have been made.”

That he would effectively rule out future debate appearances for the time being strongly suggests that the Hillary campaign discussed this in some detail beforehand and decided to launch this broadside against the network.

Indeed, Shuster stirred up a firestorm and in record time, MSNBC suspended Shuster and he apologized to the Clintons and viewers for his comments:

Click here to view the embedded video.

But was Shuster’s apology enough? Probably not, as Jamison Foser notes on Media Matters:

If NBC News wants viewers to believe that, it would help if it told us how it is taking these matters seriously. What steps has NBC News taken to ensure that things like this don’t happen again? Have executives given their reporters and pundits guidance about what kinds of things are not appropriate to say? Have they talked to Matthews and Scarborough and Carlson and Shuster and the rest about their lengthy history of objectionable comments to and about women?

I think we’ve had enough of the sexist remarks coming from MSNBC pundits and other counter parts in the media. I’m equally appalled that other top level Democrats have not called these pompous talking heads out on this. The rampant and pervasive sexism that has surrounded Hillary Clinton’s bid for the White House disgusts me as a woman and the mother of teenaged daughter in her first year in college.

When does it stop? I know I sure as hell would be outraged if someone said something like that about my daughter, and anyone who thought Hillary Clinton and her campaign would sit back and let Shuster get away with this was dreaming.
