Squandering the American Dream with Wasteful Spending

Do we really need 234 military golf courses around the world, an $80 million military ski resort in the Bavarian Alps and a parade of unnecessary weapons, ships, and planes? It is increasingly obvious that our enormous untouchable “military” budget is not always being used for our national defense.Likewise, our massive health care budget, both public and private, is not making us any healthier. Much of the spending is squandered by inflated payments to a bloated medical establishment. Why does a simple colonoscopy cost Americans nearly $7,000 when the same procedure costs $700 in the rest of the advanced nations? Healthcare and military costs are the elephants in the American economy. All other spending is minor compared to spending on healthcare … Continue reading

In The Wake of the Boston Marathon Bombing, Few Details Emerge

A short time ago, I watched the latest presser on the Boston Marathon bombings yesterday that left 3 dead and countless injured. Details released, though sparse, have alluded to ““pressure-cooker” devices that sent sharp bits of shrapnel flying into victims in the vicinity of the blast.” Surgeons at several Boston hospitals told televised news conferences on Tuesday that the explosive devices had apparently been packed with small pellets and sharp “nail-like” objects that were designed to maim their victims. The new details about the explosives emerged as President Obama announced at the White House that the F.B.I. was investigating the attack as “an act of terrorism,” but said that it was unclear if it had been carried out by an individual or … Continue reading

Two Blasts at Finish Line of Boston Marathon, Two Dead

Two blasts at the finish line of the Boston Marathon brought the Marathon to abrupt end today, as runners and spectators were injured from the explosions. Boston Police have confirmed that there are two deaths and at least 100 injuries have been treated in area hospitals. The New York Times reports: The first blasts took place about four hours after the start of the men’s race, which meant that there were still several thousand runners yet to finish the course. Several news outlets reported that a loud explosion was heard on the north side of Boylston Street, near a photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another explosion was heard shortly afterward. In a press conference with Governor Deval Patrick, Patrick confirmed … Continue reading

The Politics of Economics

The Republican Party has done an outstanding job at defining President Obama’s administration as spending more of our hard earned taxpayer dollars than any other president in American history. When in fact the evidence speaks to something entirely different; Citing Marketwatch, Rick Ungar a Contributor to Forbes Magazine, reports that President Obama has actually spent less money than any United States President since Dwight Eisenhower. David Gray, a writer for policymic.com, states that the Republican Party is not being 100% honest with the American people. The raw numbers show that yes, President Obama has spent more money than any other president in the United States, however once you calculate inflation, which is what Republicans are not telling you, President Obama … Continue reading

John Kerry Confirmed as Secretary of State

Longtime readers of The Dem Daily know that I hold John Kerry in the highest regard and had the honor of working on his ’04 presidential and for his PAC in ’06. So yes, I’ll just admit it, I’m biased. I am so pleased for John Kerry that he has been confirmed as our next Secretary of State.  I have great faith in his abilities to be a fantastic Secretary of State who will use his great skills of diplomacy for the better of the United States and the world: The 69-year-old Kerry, a veteran of the Vietnam War, has deep roots in foreign service. His father, Richard, was a Foreign Service officer, and Kerry noted at his confirmation hearing … Continue reading

The No News News Media

There was a lot of news this past week. Some of it was even reported by the news media. First, there was a football player from Notre Dame who either did or didn’t know that his girlfriend was or wasn’t real, but died sometime during the season. Six column headlines for several days announced the fraud. Network news and talk show hosts rehashed it almost daily. Two weeks ago, Lance Armstrong admitted he was a dope. Or maybe he just took dope. The news media kept sending urgent flashes all week of what he was going to tell Oprah. And then he told Oprah, and now we’ll be reading stories about it until Schwinn adds a jet engine to a … Continue reading
