I didn’t get a chance to watch the Saddleback Forum with Pastor Rick Warren on Saturday, but Stuart has a great post on it below. Apparently, John McCain, who Rick Warren, claimed was in a ‘cone of silence’ during Barack Obama’s one on one with Warren, was not in his ‘cone of silence’ after all:

In a Zanesville, Ohio speech at the Eastside Community Ministry, Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee whose entire campaign was based on the concept of ‘Change’, advocated the expansion of the the faith-based social programs initiated by George W. Bush. He announced plans to expand the use of federal money to support faith based social [...]

This really makes me sad. I am a huge fan of George Carlin. I will miss his curmudgeonly attitude, his lack of patience for religious stupidity and wonderful use of all the subtleties and absurdities of the English language to unveil our social ills.

There should have been absolutely no controversy in a resolution presented in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives this past week.
Speaker Dennis O’Brien, a Republican from Philadelphia, wanted to honor the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, which was holding its 60th annual national convention in Harrisburg. These resolutions are routine and almost always noncontroversial. The resolution pointed out [...]

“It’s wedge politics at its worst, and we have to reject it loudly, clearly and unequivocally… Let’s call those rumors what they are: lies.”– New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, quoted by the New York Times, denouncing the “whisper campaign” in the Jewish community linking Sen. Barack Obama to Islam.

I watched The Devil’s Miner (website) last night for the first time (it was originally from 2005) and what a film this is. The central question of the film is
How do we live in dignity?
Especially when you are 14 years old, living in Potosi, Bolivia, and you work at a mine inCerro Rico, “the [...]

Frenchdoc has a post below on religious fundamentalism in France. Personally, although I respect the right of people to practice whatever religion they choose, I don’t like when religious leaders get all up in our politics as they have in recent years.
In a nutshell, I’m a separation of church and state sort of person. I [...]

From Le Nouvel Observateur, we get this appalling story. Here is how it goes, a man sues a hospital because his baby is born handicapped due to neurological problems during labor. Pretty straightforward, huh? Not so: the child is now disabled because when problems arose during labor, the father physically prevented male ob-gyns and other [...]

Elizabeth Pisani’s The Wisdom of Whores - Bureaucrats, Brothels and the Business of AIDS is a great book (along with a great website ). Elizabeth Pisani is an epidemiologist with years of experience working on HIV/AIDS (or sex and drugs, as she puts, which sounds a lot, well, sexier) at a variety of agencies, including [...]

About two weeks ago, I posted about this story of an honor killing in Iraq of a girl who had fallen in love with a British soldier. There is now an update from the Guardian, and it’s not good:
“Five weeks ago Leila Hussein told The Observer the chilling story of how her husband had killed [...]

Timing is everything… Isn’t it. How curious that just a short time before the DNC Rules Committee made their final decision, the Obama campaign announced that the Obama’s were leaving the Trinity Church. Now, it could be just a coincidence that Obama decided to make this announcement tonight, but sensing an outcoming from the Rules [...]

Yup, you read that right and it happened in France, via Le Monde . So here is the story: this Muslim guy marries a young woman who told her she was a virgin. On the wedding night, he discovers - shock and horror - that she is not. The guy brings the daughter back to [...]
