Take Back Congress: A Winning Strategy

This will be a national race, run from central command and control, using stealth cash. All well and good to wonder how the Obama campaign can fare against the hidden Sith Lords. But what about poor Congresswoman Jane Doe, Anytown U.S.A.? How does SHE compete against the Rovian Hand and near-infinite supplies of cash?

The Switch Family Robinson

Down in Cave Junction, Oregon, a brave family of castaways makes do without any understanding of the society of the 20th and 21st centuries. Oddly straddling the worlds of legitimate science and the world of crank science; "education reform" and "edumacashun," they eke out a meager existence only backed by the shadowy zillionaires of the Club for Growth and Long Island political computer crank Robert Mercer. And they're running for Congress. Again.

By Elizabeth Walters   How can we improve public education for our children? The answers to this question–and the perspectives on the current quality of public education in the United States–are as varied and individualized as the 55 million students who attend public school in this country. Recently, legislators in Louisiana, like their counterparts in many other states, have sought to improve their state’s educational climate. FRACKING: Corruption a Part of Pennsylvania’s Heritage

March 22, 2012 6:24 am

by WALTER BRASCH  (part 3 of 3) The history of energy exploration, mining, and delivery is best understood in a range from benevolent exploitation to worker and public oppression. A company comes into an area, leases land in rural and agricultural areas for mineral rights, increases employment, usually in a depressed economy, strips the land of its resources, creates health problems for its workers and those in the immediate area, and then leaves. It makes no difference if...

By WALTER BRASCH   (This is Part 2 of 3. Part 1 looked at a state gag order on physicians; Part 3 examines why Pennsylvania is giving special consideration to the natural gas companies.)    The natural gas industry defends hydraulic fracturing, better known as fracking, as safe and efficient. Thomas J. Pyle, president of the Institute for Energy Research, a pro-industry non-profit organization, claims fracking has been “a widely deployed as safe extraction technique,” dating back to 1949. What he...

Maine Senator Olympia Snowe to Retire

Maine Republican Senator Olympia Snowe has announced her retirement. A moderate Republican, who has often voted with Democrats in the Senate cited the extreme partisanship of recent years as her reasoning. In a statement Snowe said, “Unfortunately, I do not realistically expect the partisanship of recent years in the Senate to change over the short term. So at this stage of my tenure in public service, I have concluded that I am not prepared to commit myself to an additional...

Former Clinton White House aide and Arizona prosecutor Andrei Cherny announced his run for Congress in Arizona’s 9th Congressional District. I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Andrei on John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign.   If you live in Arizona get involved here. In related news on Arizona and the House, “Ron Barber, an aide to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) who was wounded in the shooting spree that also injured Giffords, will run to replace her in...

Exploring a Run for Barney Frank’s Seat, Joseph Kennedy III Makes Another Move

AP News reports today that  ”Joseph Kennedy III has moved to a different Boston suburb ahead of an expected congressional bid to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Barney Frank.” Brookline’s town clerk says the 31-year-old Kennedy came to town hall Tuesday and registered to vote as a Democrat, listing a Brookline address. Kennedy had been living in Cambridge which is not in Frank’s district. A spokesman for Kennedy says he “is taking time to listen to families in the district.” I just...
