Sarah Palin stood before an audience of 600 at the first Tea Party convention and in her twinkly home-spun rhetoric, declared we don’t need a professor of law but a commander-in-chief. As expected, she received roaring applause. And, as expected, she was wrong.
After Dick Cheney and George W. Bush, aided by a compliant Congress and [...]

The union-haters must still be in hog heaven over an AFL-CIO-sponsored poll that showed most Massachusetts union households supported Republican Scott Brown over union-endorsed Democrat Martha Coakley in the special election to succeed the late Sen. Ted Kennedy.
The margin was 49 to 46 percent. The numbers remind me again of Pogo’s apt observation: “We have [...]

I don’t have a column this week.
You see, I analyze and interpret the news, trying to find something that others haven’t touched. When there’s lots of news, I have a playground of riches. But during the past week, there were only two stories, and every reporter, columnist, commentator, pundit, bloviator, and blogger weighed in on [...]

Dick Cheney has apparently been on a magical mystery media tour.
He has sought out and been interviewed by more TV journalists and talk show hosts during the past month than during the eight years he was vice president.
The topic is always the same. Torture was done during the Bush-Cheney Administration, and it was effective. Persons [...]

Sometimes, people unintentionally define themselves by what they call others.
Take Republicans who say Barack Obama is a “socialist.” It just shows how far right-wing they are.
They pinned the “socialist” or “socialistic” label on the president when he was a candidate last year. Their man, John McCain, got clobbered.
Name-calling is about all [...]

Congressional Republicans think Dick Cheney needs to go away, because “he’s hurting GOP efforts to reinvent itself after back-to-back electoral drubbings.”
Throughout his vice presidency, Cheney “showed a penchant for secrecy” but now he has “popped up in media interviews to defend the Bush-Cheney record while suggesting that the country is not as safe under President [...]

There have now been more than 4,000 deaths and 30,000 casualties of American military in the war in Iraq. More than 100,000 Iraqis and others, most of them civilian, have also been killed in what is now known to be an unnecessary war. But, we as a nation are not outraged.
We [...]

PART II: The Lapdogs Get Some Teeth
In May 2004, the New York Times, while claiming it was aggressive in pursuing stories about the Bush-Cheney Administration, slipped in an apology for acting more as the mouthpiece for politicians than as a watchdog for society. “Coverage was not as rigorous as it should have been,” the Times [...]

PART 1
The president of the Associated Press (AP) was spewing venom at the Bush-Cheney administration for having turned the Department of Defense into a propaganda machine.
Americans “expect honest answers about what’s happening to their sons and daughters,” Tom Curley told journalism students and faculty at the University of Kansas. Listing innumerable ways the Pentagon had [...]

Every House Republican and 11 Democrats voted against President Barack Obama’s $819 billion stimulus package. It still passed by a vote of 244 to 188.
There are enough votes in the Senate to pass the bill, but the obstructionist Republican minority, still nursing the wounds inflicted by the public in the November election, can block it [...]
