Post-Newtown, Mental Health Advocates Have Their Say, Too

Even as the debate over gun control captures the spotlight in discussions over the response to last month’s massacre of children in Newtown, Conn., mental health advocates also are working hard to press for their reforms, as well. Michael Fitzpatrick , executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) met Wednesday with Vice President Biden’s task force on gun control, along with other leaders of the mental health community, urging action to strengthen and expand mental health care services. Blumenthal Pledges Federal Support In Wake Of Connecticut Shooting

Reacting to the horrific shooting in his home state, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) is pledging federal support for those who need it. “As a parent and a public official, my heart and prayers are with these innocent victims, their families, and the entire community,” Blumethal, a former state attorney general, says. “I share the shock of all Connecticut at this hideous, horrific crime of inhuman violence.  I will be in close communication with law enforcement and state and local officials to ensure they receive the federal support and resources they need. ” At least 27 people–including 18 children–are reported dead as a result of the Friday morning rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in which one shooter was confirmed dead … Continue reading

Nancy Pelosi Offers Shooting Condolences
