More Americans don't believe Herman Cain's denials of sexual wrongdoing than believe them.

Many Americans don’t appear to be buying Herman Cain’s denials of allegations of serial sexual wrongdoing, according to a new national opinion poll.

The survey, taken Tuesday after the Republican presidential hopeful staged a press conference to deny allegations brought forward by multiple women, finds a plurality simply don’t believe Cain when he says the sexual harassment allegations against him are “totally fabricated.”

The survey, taken by the Poll Position polling organization, finds that 43 percent of Americans do not believe Cain’s denials of misconduct stemming from his time heading up a Washington-based restaurant association in the 1990s. Just 35 percent agree that the charges are “totally fabricated,” while 22 percent express no opinion.

The allegations against Cain have grown over the last week, only to mushroom in recent days as a woman named Sharon Bialek came forward in person to allege lewd sexual advances made toward her.

The former head of Godfather’s Pizza has flatly denied all allegations, which threaten to destroy his surging campaign for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

The Poll Position survey exposes a gender gap in how men and women view the claims made against Cain.

Women say they do not believe Cain by a 48 percent to 27 percent margin. But men say they believe Cain 43 percent to 38 percent.

The Poll Position survey was a national poll of 1,386 registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
