The No News News Media

There was a lot of news this past week. Some of it was even reported by the news media. First, there was a football player from Notre Dame who either did or didn’t know that his girlfriend was or wasn’t real, but died sometime during the season. Six column headlines for several days announced the fraud. Network news and talk show hosts rehashed it almost daily. Two weeks ago, Lance Armstrong admitted he was a dope. Or maybe he just took dope. The news media kept sending urgent flashes all week of what he was going to tell Oprah. And then he told Oprah, and now we’ll be reading stories about it until Schwinn adds a jet engine to a … Continue reading

Drip, Drip, Drip … Two New Republicans Agree To Rate Hikes On Top 2%

Add GOP Sens. Bob Corker of Tennessee and Mike Johanns of Nebraska to the list of Republicans who finally are joining the bandwagon of public opinion of those who want to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans as part of a deal to solve the coming so-called fiscal cliff. President Obama and most Democrats want to restore higher Clinton-era tax rates on the richest taxpayers as part of an overall tax-and-deficit deal which the president and Republican House Speaker John Boehner are trying to hammer out in the coming weeks. Corker appeared on that bastion of conservative media, Fox News, Sunday to state: “So, and a lot of people are putting forth a theory and I actually think it has … Continue reading

Truckin’ to Treason: The Hot Air of Secession

by WALTER BRASCH   A white Ford F-250 pick-up rumbled through town, a Confederate rebel flag on a pole behind the cab; on the rear bumper were a pro-life and three Anti-Obama stickers, two of which could not be revealed in a family newspaper. It wasn’t a lone wolf protest; several cars, trucks, and homes in the area sport similar flags and messages. During the summer, when a 4-wheel Jamboree and a Monster Truck rally are held at the local fairgrounds, attracting thousands from a multi-state area, many trucks fly rebel flags, insignia, and political statements. During the annual eight-day fair at the end of September, vendors sell all kinds of items with the Confederate battle flag, most of … Continue reading

When Pigs Fly, or, How to Elect Nixon Again and Again and Again …

Because we are at that silly season when, rather than banding together with those who best express one’s beliefs, it’s time to roll out the Green Party and piss on the Democrats for not being “progressive enough,” while, on the other side, there are a number, like Gary Johnson’s libertarian campaign, who will claim that their votes for him aren’t wasted and might as well have never been cast.

Still No Love, Or Trust, For Romney On The Right

Possibly complicating his challenge to President Obama, Republican Mitt Romney finds the peace he had fashioned with those on the right wing of his party to be in serious trouble. Although conservatives have long distrusted and criticized Romney as too moderate, most quieted their barbs after the former Massachusetts governor formally won enough delegates required to clinch the GOP presidential nomination. Now, with the Republican convention in Tampa just weeks away, Romney finds a new open rebellion on his right flank. The major cause for the new conservative rancor is an interview that his chief campaign spokeswoman gave to Fox News in which she touted the benefits of the state-level healthcare reform Romney enacted as governor. The spokeswoman was rebutting … Continue reading

Anger Is Not Enough

we need to focus our anger on gutless state legislators who talk tough and pass stupid and dangerous laws against women, against public safety, against science and education, against regulation and voting rights, against common sense and reason … Continue reading

The Faux Outrage of Greta Van Sufferance

So, as we listen to the bigotry — against undocumented workers that WASP businesses hire, against American and Canadian Muslims, against Arab-American immigrants — don’t you doubt that the second Klan would have been right there with the teabaggers and the reichties. Continue reading
