On Thursday, the Department of Justice released “four secret memos used by the Bush administration to justify torture.” The ACLU is calling for the DoJ to “appoint an independent prosecutor to investigate torture under the Bush administration.”
The memos describe “brutal interrogation techniques” used by the C.I.A.:

Richard Cohen’s WaPo 10/14 column on the Plame leak being no big deal is creating a lot of negative attention . Which may reinforce what I suggested to him last year after a really absurd column on being purple: maybe he needs some time off to unwind and get refocused. Meanwhile, a small NBC/WSJ survey has some startling numbers.

Dean speaks out on pro-Roberts Democrats
Minnesota’s Mark Dayton and Indiana’s Evan Bayh announced today that they’ll vote against the confirmation of John G. Roberts, bringing the Democratic tally to 14 no, 11 yes and 19 still to go.

It’s a given that the Bush administration, which tried to turn Iraq into a laboratory for conservative economic policies, will try the same thing on the Gulf Coast. The Heritage Foundation, which has surely been helping Karl Rove develop the administration’s recovery plan, has already published a manifesto on post-Katrina policy.
